W2 connection problem

NZ0T
I have no problem connecting to my W2 using the utility directly thru my laptops port but when I try to use my virtual ports emulator (from Eterlogic.com) I can't get it to work.  It says it is sending and receiving ";" but doesn't do anything else.  This port emulator program works great with my K3 allowing me to run AcLog and K3_EZ at the same time using one port with a usb/serial adapter.  The settings I have in the port emulation program are:
Speed 9600
DTR/RTS  NO
Parity no
Bits 8
Stop bits 1
Read/Interval Timeout -1

I would like to be able to run AcLOg and the W2 computer display at the same time when it becomes available.  Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?  Go slow - I'm computer stupid!

Are you selecting the correct COM port from the W2 Utility 'Port' page?

Yes, forgot to mention that.

Bill,

Will you clarify something for me?

You mentioned a terminal emulator.  If I understand you correctly, with this
emulator, you can run two separate applications (a logging program and the
K3 utility) at the same time.  ...and that both of these applications are
accessing and controlling the K3 at the same time via it's serial port.  Is
this correct?

My second question concerns the W2.  How is the computer connection made to
the W2?  Is it not made directly to the W2?  What cable goes where?

Thanks,
Dan - W4TQ

Hi Dan,

I am using this emulator program:

I use it to run two seperate programs from one port.  The program allows me to create a seperate virtual port.  I am using actual port 5 and I have created a virtual port 9 which can share applications.  The connection to the W2 is a Dynex DX-UBDB9 USB/serial adapter thru the Elecraft supplied serial cable directly to the W2 serial connection.

Hope this helps.

Re: W2 connection problem - NZ0T Comment

Julian, G4ILO
What program are you trying to talk to the W2 with? Can you use the terminal in the K3 Utility to send commands to it? The idea being to establish whether there is a problem with the particular software you are using and VSPE. Does it work if you connect to the real serial port without VSPE and any other program running?

Sorry I don't have a W2 so perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree here. But I do know that I can't use the latest version of Fldigi with VSPE, which does suggest to me that some programs may not like working with VSPE for some unknown reason.

Hi Julian,

It works just fine with the real serial port.  Works fine with the virtual port with the K3 but not with the W2.

Have you tried the demo version of this: http://www.serialportsplitter.com/splitter.html ? It might help determine whether the problem is with the emulation of VSPE or something else.

Unfortunately the only other free serial port splitter I know of is com0com http://com0com.sourceforge.net/ and I couldn't get that to work at all. There is also LP-Bridge http://www.telepostinc.com/LPB.html but that emulates a K3 in memory and I don't know whether it would work with a W2.

Thanks for the reply Bill, but I'm still confused.

Will you be running more than one application on the W2 through this port?
If not, then what is the purpose of using the emulator program as opposed to
defining a port via the operating system?  (If you are using usb/serial
adaptors, you can define as many serial ports via the operating system as
you like, right?)

Believe me, I'm not being critical.  I'm not a computer jock, and I'm trying
to understand.

I use a logging program that I like very much (DX4WIN), and I would like to
be able to use it at the same time as the K3 utility, both addressing the
K3.  If I understand you correctly, I could make use of the emulator program
to run both programs at the same time.

Thanks,
Dan - W4TQ

yes dan you could use the same program I do to do that.  I have not tried to run the K3 utility through it but I have run K3_EZ with my logging program and it works well.  I think I will need to run the W2 with a seperate cable to a different port on my computer to run it too.

LP-Bridge only works with K3. It is not a generic serial splitter, but more like a multi-port router with conditioning of the data.
