Weighted Knobs in K3?

Elecraft mailing list
Before I install 73inc weighted knobs on my K3S, is anybody of the opinion that these knobs cause long-term damage to the PTO shaft?  These knobs are quite heavy, compared to the factory ones.

Seems Elecraft used lightweight knobs for a reason.

Input appreciated.

I've been using a pair on my K3 since about 2011 and also have had a
pair installed on my K3S for just over a year now. Zero problems. The
tuning feel with the weighted knobs is wonderful. Go for it.

Ed,

Whether the weighted knobs will cause pre-mature wear to the encoder
bearings is undetermined.

However, I would caution you to remove those heavy knobs before
transporting or shipping the K3.  Any vertical bumps can cause the extra
weight to bend the encoder shaft and create "rough spots" in the knob
when rotated.

Be aware that if you ship the radio, you will want to remove the heavy
knobs...

If the radio is man handled, the the moment of inertia, (for lack of a
better term), can get quite high when the package is dropped, and break
the encoder shaft.

Ed ...

They've been installed on my K3 for 9 years, and on my KX3 ever since it came out.  No problems so far.

The company is 73cnc, by the way.  Not 73inc.

They no longer make the spun aluminum knobs for the K3, unfortunately.  Just the plain black ones.

While we're on the subject of protection for the K3, back in the fall of 2007, when we were asked to setup a display table for the newly released rigs (sn 008 & 021) for the Lebanon Hamfest and in a quandry as to how to transport them safely, the late Tom Hammond (N0SS) came across military surplus night-vision goggle cases that are just perfect for the K3.  I see they are still available for $25.  At least the site is still active.  I wouldn't drive an Abrams tank over them, but they'll survive darn near anything less.

Used one for years.  Never had a problem.  The encoder is not THAT
fragile.  The extra weight is very pleasant to have.
