What is this stuff??

n0jrn
Hey gang:

A friend drop off some solder he didn't need.     I'm having trouble
identifying it so figured I would ask you.

Made by Kester !

Date of Man.   is      July 02

Part #             14-7150

SN62PB36AG02

Diameter is    .015

I can't find anything on the internet.    Is this stuff safe to use for
radio ??

Just curious

Thanks and 73             Jerry    N0JRN

Re: What is this stuff??

Roelof Bakker
Hello Jerry,

This is tin/lead/silver solder.
The melting point is a little higher than standard 60/40 tin lead solder.

It is no longer recommended for Elecraft kits.
I use it when a stronger joint is on order, e.g. soldering connectors on a
PCB.

I hope this helps.

Hi Jerry,

That's perfectly normal stuuf you have:

Sn62= 62% Tin (Stannum)
Pb36=36% Lead (Plumbium)
Ag2=2% Silver (Argentum)

Plus some flux (I hope...:-) to let it flow. Just let it melt on the iron
and see if it smokes and you smell the resin.

As solder that contains silver seems harder to remove from a PC board it's a
bit less recommended, I read, but I used the same stuff to construct my K2
with SSB/NB/160/KAT2. It works fine and I did have to unsolder some parts,
with which I had no difficulties.

It is solid core with no flux. I would not use it.

contains silver, tin, and lead.......but no flux. You want
Rosin flux.

Re: What is this stuff??

Trevor Jacobs
This is not correct. I have a roll of it sitting on the bench and it is
definitely rosin core solder. I concur with Peter and Roelof on the mix.
Kester makes darn good solder, and this is VERY good for surface mount
work, especially in the small diameter. It's not easy to get the VERY
small diameter with silver any longer. Last time I needed some, I had to
special order it. Hang on to it.

Trevor and others:

See <http://www.all-spec.com/1/viewitem/KWSW00/ALLSPEC/prodinfo/w3path=cat>
for the answer.  All-spec says solid wire, NO FLUX!!!  Do not try to use for normal soldering, it'll drive you batty.
