What monitor to use?

Paul VanOveren-2
The SVGA card arrives for my P3 today and I have the opportunity to get a
free flat screen monitor 1024 x 768 resolution. Just wondering if that is
sufficient or whether I should purchase one with more/higher resolution?"
 Advice anyone.?

Hi Paul,

If it's free then I think you should get it and decide for yourself. The standalone P3 is 480 x 272 so 1024 x 768 will be a huge improvement. Then if you decide you want a larger screen you will be in a good position to know exactly what size will best meet your requirements.

I just checked the menu choices for the SVGA card and 1024 x 768 is one of the available choices.

I am using such a monitor because of space limitations (and because mine was free, too).
It is a big improvement over the small screen on the P3 itself. But a bigger monitor is
advantageous, because you can spot holes in pileups (etc.) more easily without having to
change the span. I think if I had the room, I would get a bigger one.

Paul,

You definitely can't beat the price on that monitor.  On my bench here at the lab I use 23" monitor and set it to 1280x1024.  Yes it's big but I have some room for it up above the radio.  If you just purchased the SVGA board, be sure to upgrade the firmware on it (and on the P3) to the latest 1.26/1.16 .  You'll also need to download and install latest P3 utility if you haven't already done so.  It is available HERE.

What native resolutions does the P3SVGA support - just the four listed
on the web page?  I see quite a few inexpensive, small (15 to 19")
monitors at 1366 x 768 and 1600 x 900 - obviously derived from the new
laptop panels - these days.  The lowest three resolutions listed are
becoming increasingly rare in new monitors.

Re: What monitor to use?

Hi Joe,

I opened the menu option on my P3 and here are the available resolutions:

1024 x 768
1280 x 1024
1440 x 900
1920 x 1080
1920 x 1080 alt

Thanks, Mike.  Unfortunately, that means that the inexpensive 1366 x
768 monitors will not be a very good fit because of the differences
in aspect ratio vs. the two lower resolutions that would "fit."

Re: What monitor to use?

Alan Bloom
1024 x 768 seems to be the lowest common denominator - almost all
monitors support that resolution.  I normally leave my P3 SVGA set for
1024 x 768 just because the text is bigger and it makes the lines fatter
and easier to see.

For a photo, the aspect ratio has to be correct or the photo looks
"stretched."  For a panadapter or other graph-like image it doesn't matter.

It would make a big difference with text (text terminal) displaying
a 1024 x 768 image on a 1366 x 768 raster.  The characters will be
stretched out - look wide and flat - and possibly difficult to read.
