Although more and more my rigs are controlled by software, I still
like to tune that knob a bit. But the more I'm around other rigs, the less satisfied I am with the stock K2 tuning knob Do you have a recommended favorite that is plug-to-plug exchangeable and available. That is, I've heard praise of the Yeasu knob, but also that it isn't available from any supplier anymore. Also, I read one article about a substitution which required an additional "fiber" washer - don't want that. The Argo V knob looks very similar, anyone know if that will work? 73, Paul _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi
Most of the knob changes have been to the Yaesu knob. It works well and is heavy enough but looks out of place to me. I have seen a Kenwood knob on a K2 that looked better. It was gray and had the finger dimple and fit better than the Yaesu. To me it looked more like it belonged on the K2. I don't remember which Kenwood the knob was from but the owner said it cost about $35. I like the K2 knob with the finger dimple add on. It looks good and works well. You can get the finger dimple from Elecraft for about $5. I have put them on everything K2, K1 and even the KX1. I like the orignal knob with a FingerDimple. I think the other knobs make the K2 look "funny" or strange. I would like to see more weight on the original knob, but It works for me. I am a large person with high hands and I have no trouble dealing with the K2 orignal knob. Yes, it might not be the best...but there are very few options out there for knobs in my estimation. I have looked for a replacement knob that was not part of I, K, Y or TT and there are really no options. I found one manufacture that might have a knob that would work better (made out of spun aluminum) but they only manufactured when they had an order of 200 or more. So, even getting a "test" knob was not an option.
The FingerDimple (I am not connected to the product) made the difference for me. The K2 knob with a fingerdimple. I have added fingerdimples to my K2's and
K1, they work fine and look good too. Amen Don! I don't know why anyone would want anything else. One suggestion for positioning. Mount the dimple opposite one of the knob shaft access holes so you can add a counterweight if necessary. I like very light drag, and the added dimple weight had a tendency to make the knob want to rotate toward the bottom. I inserted a small bit of solder in the hole opposite the dimple which nicely balanced the knob. Silky smooth tuning yet my knob does not want to work backwards to seek gravity when I stop (...or after spinning it). 73, Bill W4ZV _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Paul,
Find my K2 knob with the finger dimple added works much better as echoed by other contributors to the list. Another route may be done if possible is to add a thin external "tire' to the K2 knob. Seem to remember there was some discussion of this on the Elecraft Reflector earlier in the year and assuming that the parts needed are still available in the market. I did this in the past with my JRC JST-135 transceiver by using a VFO knob from the NRD-535 receiver. Like the K2, the original knob on the JST-135 had a rough serrated circumference in hard plastic. The knob from the NRD-535 has a rubber tyre on the circumference which transforms the feel of the knob totally to the better. I tired this a while back. If fits the shaft, but has no recess in the back, so it hangs out off the front of the rig and as a result looks...ugly. I use a VE3RPF Spinner Attachment (link at the bottom of the Elecraft home page). 73, Lyle KK7P _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. My favorite knob for my K2 is the main tuning knob from my old Kenwood TS-180. For anyone who was active in the 40m Fox Hunts, this rig was Ol' Kenwood, featured in a number of stories I posted. The knob is just the right diameter, and has a molded "finger sharpener" dimple molded right in. 73, Bob N6WG _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Why not get the spinner attachment for the standard Elecraft knob? Easy
addition as it glues on. Stuart K5KVH _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
