For those outside the U.S who would like to purchase a Yamaha CM500 headset, B&H does ship internationally with a few exceptions. See their “Destinations” page here for particulars:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/HelpCenter/Shipping.jsp#shippingDest I purchased a CM500 from them several months ago. Since I’m only 30 miles away from them it got here in a flash. On past purchases from them of other small items I have been satisfied as well. On the CM500, theirs was the best price I could find. I’m definitely not a headset guy – I much prefer the open-air speaker environment when possible. Nevertheless, I like this headset overall. It is very comfortable to wear for an extended period of time, even for those with above-average hat sizes. I have used it a couple of times in phone contests. I tried, but didn’t at all care for VOX operation. I find that there is little acoustic isolation between the microphone stalk and the ear cup to which it is attached, so when you move around, the noises that the headset itself creates trigger the VOX. So I now use a footswitch and that works beautifully. No unwanted noise triggering and no having the VOX drop during a breath from a long contest exchange. With the footswitch, VOX also does not get triggered when the XYL remarks “ANOTHER rare DX station that you must work right now?!” The sound quality of the speakers in the set is just fine and the mic is hot, so no worries about inadequacy in producing appropriate voice level to the K3. The usual disclaimers apply – I have nothing to do with B&H other than being a satisfied customer. 73 de Tyler, KC2LST ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Hi,
B&H does ship internationally but not the CM500 headset. Due to the manufacturers restrictions, we are unable to accept orders with a shipping address in GERMANY for the following item(s): Yamaha CM500 - Headset with Boom Microphone Please provide a different ship to location or remove these items from your cart. This applies to other (european) countries as well. For whatever reason Yamaha doesn´t want this headset to be distributed world wide. 73 Win DK9IP Am 17.02.2012 22:29, schrieb [hidden email]: > For those outside the U.S who would like to purchase a Yamaha CM500 headset, B&H does ship internationally with a few exceptions. I am a bit luckily here in Hong Kong. US$20 boom mics are of good quality and I eventually dispose of my Heil Traveler dual head set.
I am a CM500 user as well. My CM500 is purchased via my colleague in US. One of my contacts in the UK has asked Yamaha why they don't distribute
the CM-500 outside the US. The answers he received were not very convincing. He continues to negotiate with Yamaha, so at some future date it may be possible to obtain the headsets here in Europe. Hi Peter,
The Koss SB40 looks physically identical. Makes you wonder if Koss makes them for Yamaha or vice versa. Here in the US the SB40 is available for $30 plus free shipping from Amazon. Please let us know what you learn from your research. http://www.amazon.com/Koss-SB40-Computer-Headset-Microphone/dp/B00005ML7T/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329566940&sr=8-1 73, Mike K2MK

This would be a great find, if true. The SB40 is available in Europe,
for example here in Germany for 32 Euros from Amazon: <http://www.amazon.de/Koss-SB40-KOSS-Headset-schwarz/dp/B00005ML7T/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329567287&sr=8-1> If someone can verify that these are identical, it would help a lot. Otherwise, I would be willing to order and compare with my CM500 that I brought with me from the U.S. and provide feedback on the reflector. 73, Mitch DJ0QN On 18.02.2012 13:11, Mike K2MK wrote: > Hi Peter, > > The Koss SB40 looks physically identical. Koss makes a range of stereo headsets and Walmart sells them for much
less than does Amazon. On 2/18/2012 7:11 AM, Mike K2MK wrote: > Hi Peter, > > The Koss SB40 looks physically identical. Makes you wonder if Koss makes > them for Yamaha or vice versa. Hi Geoff,
The only difference I see is that the Koss and the Monacor have a dynamic mic insert. The headphone are high impedance and seem to suit the K3, and the hf noise seems to less of a problem even without the mods. Since I normally only operate CW and PSK the mic does not bother me. 73 Tim gm4lmh -------------------------------------------------- From: "Geoffrey Downs" <[hidden email]> Sent: Saturday, February 18, 2012 1:21 PM To: <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500 Headset > Headphones look similar but mic and boom do not look identical. > > 73 to all > > Geoff > G3UCK > > -----Original Message----- > From: Mike K2MK > Sent: Saturday, February 18, 2012 12:11 PM > To: [hidden email] > Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500 Headset > > Hi Peter, > > The Koss SB40 looks physically identical. I live near Milwaukee where the Koss factory is located. They have an
outlet store. I'll try to stop in there this week and see if I can try on a pair.... Stay tuned....... BTW...one of the best kept secrets about Koss is that they will do lifetime repairs if their products fail. I have a Koss headset that I use for CW that I have taken to the outlet store for repair several times. They'll usually repair while you wait. They also will sell you wear items like earpads for very low cost. It's a great deal if you live close by..otherwise I think you have to pay shipping. An update:
I stopped by the Koss Factory Store today. I looked at the SB49 first. (The SB45 is identical to the SB49 but without the volume control in the cord). I didn't really like the way the SB49 fit. It's a very subjective thing but comfort was what I was looking for. The other thing I didn't like was the flexible boom for the microphone was very "whippy". It was almost like a wet noodle. Not good..... Next I looked at the SB40. The fit was great and very comfortable for the 5 minutes I wore it. The mic boom was stiffer too. The SB40 has a dynamic mic element. I ended up buying the SB40. The price was $39.00 plus sales tax. I was all set to buy a Yamaha CM500 but I really wanted to see how they fit first. I looked at a couple places and couldn't find a local store that had the CM500. For this reason I look at Koss. The other thing Koss has going for it is the limited lifetime warranty. Being that I live near the factory this is a big advantage. Second is that I've owned other Koss products and have always been very happy with them. As I said I've never used the Yamaha CM500 but the Koss SB40 looks very similar. I'm also kind of a headphone junkie. With the K3 I figure that most modern headsets have much more performance (frequency response, etc) than one needs for communication. So they are all pretty much up to the task. Same for the microphone. With the TX and RX Eq features of the K3 I decided to concentrate on fit and comfort. I think that juist about any headset and microphone can be made to sound good. I haven't used the SB40's yet but will report back once I've played with them a bit. Radio Shack used to sell these with a RS box, but labeled Koss on the
phones. I have been using them for years, wore one out. And they sell replacement pads on their web store (Koss). Many years ago, someone on another reflector posted a cheap way to make the
equivalent of a Heil Proset. Radio Shack had the Optimus PRO-50MX boom headset, which was made by Koss, on sale. The mic and its round clamshell could be replaced by a Heil HC-4 and the Heil mic holder. The received audio was said to be crisper/better than the Heil headphones. This was before the days of radios with TX EQ, so the only way to get communications quality audio was with a different mic. Now Heil doesn't sell the mic elements, though I still have spares. I did that, and it worked fine. I still have them but prefer a tighter headphone fit and usually use my Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones (no mic). I just found the original posting: http://lists.contesting.com/_cq-contest/1998-05/msg00080.html 73, Jim N7US -----Original Message----- Radio Shack used to sell these with a RS box, but labeled Koss on the phones. I have been using them for years, wore one out. And they sell replacement pads on their web store (Koss). One of the guys on the Ten Tec list who does a bit of contesting at a multi-op has said good things about a Koss headset, and I suspect it was the SB40. I would expect it to work just fine and sound good with the K3. Suggested settings for the CM500 would be a good starting point for the SB40. 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Well....got a brief chance to play with the Koss SB40 headset tonight.
I followed K9YC's advice and set up similar to what others have done for the Yamaha CM550. The two bands at -16, third band at -10 and the two highest at +8. I worked a few people and they all said the audio sounded very good. Frankly, in the monitor I thought it sounded terrible. But most people don't like the way they sound. If I get a chance this weekend I plan on getting on a quiet band with a local that knows my voice before I start making too many adjustments. But I will say the SB40's are VERY comfortable. The headphones sound good as well but I haven't tweaked the RX EQ from my old settings, flat on SSB and a sharp peak at 400 Hz for CW. The bands were pretty noisy tonight so more evaluation is in order.
