Yamaha CM500 Headset

N8CEP
I ordered a Yamaha CM500 headset through Amazon for
my newly completed K3. They are really nice and comfortable.
I have kind of larger ears and they completely cover my
ears and don't bother my glasses. My ears hurt if I wear any
headset that lays on my ears so these will be nice. The sound
in the earphone is good. Will be testing the mic later this
afternoon. $59.95 from Amazon.com. I think this is a bit more
than others have paid but I got free shipping. Thanks to the
people who posted about this headset on the Elecraft reflector.
I bought these with confidence that they would do a good job!

Hi Keith,

Yes the price has increased.  Last fall I bought a set from Amazon for about
$49.00.  I dropped a monitor on that set (UGH!!!).  They still work but I
bought another set just in case they stop working during a contest.  I also
paid the increased price.

I think you will be happy with them.  I have worn them through several
contest with glasses and they are the most comfortable I have used.

Good luck,

I used a Heil Pro-Set Plus for several years before my friend, Jim Brown,
urged me to try the CM500. Well, it is a heck of lot more comfortable, the
sound is better, and the mic works much better. Anyone want to buy a Heil
Pro-Set Plus in excellent condition?

plug into a mono jack am I ???

Keith,

The K3 jack is a stereo one, but since only the tip is connected, it is
mono in operation.

I have played with my newly acquired CM500 using the test server on Echolink, and heard a definite background noise - which I think was from the server.  I tried biasing the mic (with the enclosed AAA device), and heard no difference.

When does this electret mic need to be biased?

Whenever it's being used. That said, if you plugged it into a PC mic in
jack, the PC was biasing it...

Don't use the accessory battery box, not needed. Set bias on in the K3

Re: Yamaha CM500 Headset

Pete Smith N4ZR
In reply to this post by Oscar, WB5GCX
My one-and only problem with my CM-500 is that after a couple of months,
the 1/8" stereo plug on the headphones became intermittent on one side.
I cut off the existing plug and tried to solder on a 1/4" stereo plug.
It wasn't easy.

The problem is that each side of the cable contains two conductors
(stereo, right?)  The tricky part is that the signal sides are colored
and, so far as I can tell, must be coated with some sort of insulating
material to keep them from shorting to the bare common conductors.  That
coating takes some heavy-duty heating and tinning to get a solderable
end on the wires. It can be done, and the headset is emphatically worth
it, but it's harder than it looks at first.

Re: Yamaha CM500 Headset

Mike K2MK
Hi Pete,

Yamaha will replace your headphones if they are within the one year warranty period. It will not be necessary to return the defective headset. You would just have to e-mail or fax a copy of your receipt. The customer service phone number is: 714-522-9000 (PST). If it is past warranty it might be helpful to speak to them anyway.

I had a head band failure and received a replacement.

For those with Heil headsets, I sold my Proset K2 (originally purchased from Elecraft) on eBay. I listed it starting at $1 and had quite a few bidders before it concluded at $106 plus shipping.

I just bought one too with all the recommendations on this list, and it
works great so far. Just turn the bias on and its plug and play. Don't have
a Heil to compare it to but this will work fine for me.

With all this talk of the Yamaha headset I tried to purchase one in the UK
however they appear to be unobtainable.  Does anyone know of a UK or Eu
source?

Keith,

Afraid not, attempted to order one on-line, and received the message:

'Due to the manufacturers restrictions, we are unable to accept orders
with a shipping address in UNITED KINGDOM for the following item(s):

Yamaha CM500 - Headset with Boom Microphone
Please provide a different ship to location or remove these items from
your cart.'

So far I haven't found a supplier in the UK.

Yes, unfortunately it is all too common for manufacturers to limit
distribution of their products between countries. The usual purpose of
this is to allow local distributors to make a higher profit with
excessive markups.  From reports I've received, that also seems to be
the case with distribution of Fair-Rite products in the UK, and may also
be true in EU.

There are sometimes other reasons for such a limitation, like
restrictions placed on business or EMC and safety inspections by various
countries, or the difficulty of exchanging funds, and so on.
