Hi all, the back of my radio desk looks like a twisty maze of tiny little cables, all alike. The fact that the table rests against a wall doesn't sure help. Pulling out the K3 is sort of doable, but putting it back in position is a real pain. How are you guys doing your cable management? I'm looking for suggestions, or better yet pictures. If you have several pieces of equipment, you'll never be able to have it
neat. I found that by having my L-Shaped desk 2' out from the wall you'll be able keep some sort of order (whatever that is). I also have a copper buss bar on the back of the desk for grounding. I usually fasten cables that are going in similar directions together with little Velcro ties. Of course one must use your head and not fasten them to the coax cables. Even the coax cables I'll tie together. I have numerous holes in the buss bar so I can strategically hang some of the cables from that. All my outlets are on the wall behind with multiple sockets and circuits. I'll tie them together too. All this does make it easier to walk behind the equipment without getting my legs and feet tangled up in it, most the time. Good luck! 73 Dwight NS9I On 3/24/2012 3:29 PM, Pierfrancesco Caci wrote: > Hi all, > the back of my radio desk looks like a twisty maze of tiny little > cables, all alike. The back of my desk has two 36 inch doors in place of a wall between the
shack and a combination pantry and utility room. On each door is a coat rack for family use. When I open the doors I have full access to the back of the radio and computer wiring. The wiring is never neat. I think wires that are left in the dark tangle them selves no matter how you try to keep them neat. Or you can put one of those mirror tiles against the wall behind your
radio. That said, I would give almost anything for enough room in my shack to have a 24 inch walk through behind my station. 73, Pete N4ZR The World Contest Station Database, updated daily at www.conteststations.com The Reverse Beacon Network at http://reversebeacon.net, blog at reversebeacon.blogspot.com, spots at telnet.reversebeacon.net, port 7000 and arcluster.reversebeacon.net, port 7000 On 3/25/2012 6:14 AM, Bill W4ZV wrote: > Pierfrancesco Caci wrote >> Pulling out the K3 is sort of doable, but putting it back in >> position is a real pain. >> > This mirror image of the rear panel may help: > > http://www.n5na.net/download/k3_rear_panel_mirror.pdf > > 73, Bill > > -- > View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/cable-management-tp7402003p7403215.html > Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. > ______________________________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:[hidden email] > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
I have plans for a new custom operating desk, and it will happen within
the next 3 months. The desk will have shelves (for power supplies, surge protectors, etc) on the back side along with cable management trays at the top. The real magic is that I will install "Appliance wheels" like those normally for under refrigerators on the bottom of each pedestal so I can move the complete desk out away from the wall for maintenance. Now, all I have to do is clean up the woodworking shop and begin cutting the parts. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/25/2012 7:03 AM, Pete Smith N4ZR wrote: > Or you can put one of those mirror tiles against the wall behind your > radio. I am constantly disassembling/reassembling my K3 station because of lightning. Disassembling is pretty easy "blindfolded". I move the K3 forward to be sure everything is disconnected.
To reassemble: --Put K3 on right side feet --Attach 3 antennas (ANT1, ANT2, and Aux for second receiver) --attach power pole, ground wire --Attach key and paddle, KeyOut wire to amp. --attach external speakers --Place K3 normally --attach IF output, Line In, Line Out --Attach 2 DIN connecters, (ALC is only signal I use) and serial port --attach microphone That's 15 connections. Having a routine makes it go faster and best assures nothing is missed. I remember back in the early 50's, must have been before I went into the

The best set up in terms of cable management I have seen in my short time as a ham is at the San Diego Yacht club. I would love to get my shack wired up like they got it. It is a thing of beauty.
My set up is a rats nest with my quadra and my king conversation multiple antennas and y connectors, lp pan, multiple rotators, soon to have SteppIR SDA-100, etc. need to find some semblance of order in the emerging chaos.
