com port PTT question

DK5EW
Hello all,
I have a small problem with PTT via com port and ACC plug.
I made a 2 pin cable 9pol from PC to ACC 15pol to K3.
I soldered pin 4 for PTT and pin 5 for ground.
I tested it for correct wire and short - all O.K.
Now as soon I connect the TRX-ACC and the com port (serial 9 pin) to my
PC the K3 goes on TX.
Any solution out there ?

best regards
Erwin/DK5EW

Re: com port PTT question

Hi Erwin,

You can't connect the COM port directly to the ACC port - you need a
transistor in the middle to convert the high/low voltages to a "pull
to ground". Interfaces like the ones described at:

http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/FSKConnection

would work.

If you are directly connecting a serial port signal pin to the K3 ACC
PTT, that will cause trouble, and may damage the K3.  The voltages out
of a serial port can be up to 25 volts, both positive and negative.  You
need some sort of conversion (a single transistor keying circuit) to
drive the K3 PTT input between 5 volts and ground levels.

On the other hand, the K3 already has provision for PTT and Keying
through the serial port DTR and/or RTS signals.  You probably have a
serial cable between the K3 and the PC for loading firmware, so use that
connection and set the CONFIG: PTT--KEY menu to whichever line your
software is using for PTT.

You can connect your PC's com port to the K3's com port and use either RTS or DTR to key the radio. Have a look at the PTT-KEY configuration menu item in your owner's manual. Section 3.3.2 in "The Elecraft K3: Design, Configuration, and Operation" describes how to do this in greater detail. An excerpt is:

"There are at least four ways to key your K3 with a computer. The first is to use the RTS or DTR signals in the RS232 serial port connector. Your computer program must be able to send CW (and operate the push-to-talk, if needed) by activating the RTS and DTR lines. The K3 converts the RS232 signal levels (see Appendix B) to the required computer logic levels. The CONFIG:PTT-KEY menu allows you to choose which of the two RS232 signals is used for PTT and which is used for Keying. Table 3 12 shows the CONFIG:PTT-KEY menu to set up for computer keying and PTT. When using this method, make sure CONFIG:PTT-KEY and the computer program keying and PTT choices are the same."

Re: com port PTT question

DK5EW
TNX all for advice. !
I tried via RS232/USB FTDI but that caused problems with WSJT. As I want
to use also CAT I decided to go via 15pol ACC and PC's com 1.
Now I made that simple npn transistor solution and that works fine now.
