I just tried upgrading to the new beta firmware
from the last beta firmware... normally when I do this, the k3 puts the MCU LD on the display then at some point the K3 freaks out and the red tx led starts blinking back light goes black this has happened every time (maybe 7 times) I have done a firmware upgrade then I have to turn the power off to the k3 Because the K3 is locked up in stupid mode and will not respond either to the computer/k3 util or any button on the K3's face (like the off button) then restart the power supply, then turn the k3 again and all is well and the upgrade has continued just fine this time I was not so fortunate I unziped and copied the software into the K3 Firmware directory started K3 util it said there was new MCU firmware the box was checked I told it to go ahead and install it then I get some negotiations between the computer and the K3 then the k3 util starts talking about errors the K3 freaks out and the display goes black red tx led is blinking k3 util starts babbling about failed connection I have to do the turn off the power supply dance, turn off the k3 util, turn the power supply back on, turn the k3 back on but this time no joy repeat at least 5 times finally I turn the power supply back on turn the k3 back on (same flashing red tx led and black display with MCU LD dimly seen on screen) start the k3 util pgm again select ALL the check boxes (by the way by now it says the k3 has NO firmware installed) I tell it to install ALL the firmware this time it works the rig lights back up and all is well EXCEPT FOR MY BLOOD PRESSURE...... can some one tell me exactly how this is suppose to work and what steps I must be doing wrong. this is getting very old and even more scary, I'm about to get to the point I will never update again, it's just not worth the terror I have to go through to get it done little history: I am running XP home, I have uninstalled/ downloaded K3 util again fresh/ reinstalled K3 util at least 2 times previously, to try to fix this. cleaned the register, deleted any residual files stood on my head and prayed (not and easy task) considered sacrificing virgins, but none were to be found :-( help, please! -- GB & 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Sam,
It sounds like something is interfering with the communications between K3 Utility and the K3 itself. Are you using a true RS232 port on the PC, or a USB-RS232 adapter? If there is a USB adapter inline, are you then going through a USB Hub? If a USB adapter, are you using the latest drivers for your adapter? There are many of us using USB to RS232 convertors with no trouble at all. Ever. Myself included. There are others who have had intermittent problems like you are describing. Often, updating drivers for the USB adapter or removing a hub from the line, or using a different USB adapter have cleared this up completely. Also make sure that when you are running K3 utility, that you do not have any other program running that may talk to that port (like HRD, etc) GL, Bruce N1RX ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Sam,
It is normal for the K3 display to go blank following each piece of a firmware load (the red TX light blinks once too). It should come right back again and proceed on if you just wait. If one panics and presses buttons, or manually cycle power or does other clicking on the K3 Utility window, yes, it can get stuck, and you have to do the "Disconnect Power Thing". Is there any chance that you have a flaky USB to serial adapter? Try using a computer with a real serial port. If that is not possible, try another adapter and be certain you have the latest drivers loaded. I have loaded firmware many many times as a firmware field tester, and have never had a problem, except once when I did something stupid during the firmware load. I have always used a real serial port which helps a lot too. Just start the firmware load (use normal mode in K3 Utility and click "Send All Firmware to the K3"), then let it run to completion. 73, Don W3FPR Sam Morgan wrote: > I just tried upgrading to the new beta firmware > from the last beta firmware... > > <snip> > > this time I was not so fortunate > I unziped and copied the software into the K3 Firmware directory > started K3 util > it said there was new MCU firmware > the box was checked > I told it to go ahead and install it > > Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Are you using the latest version of K3 Utility? Also, some have reported fewer problems if they reduce the baud rate of the K3 itself. Note, only K3 util and EZ K3 pgms were having any problems DXLab HRD K3_Memory PowerSDR-IF ..... none of them have had any problems with data between the computer and the K3 Thanks for the help pointing me in the right direction. Sam,
What version of the K3 utility are you using? I seem to dimly remember something about needing a certain version for the last (some number) updates. I'm using 1.3.2.14 73, Mike NF4L Sam Morgan wrote: > On 5/9/2010 3:28 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: > >> Sam, >> >> It is normal for the K3 display to go blank following each piece of a >> firmware load (the red TX light blinks once too). Sam,
Yes, that certainly does point the finger at a flaky serial port. It does not happen often, but it certainly is possible. I am glad to hear that you have a better handle on it now. 73, Don W3FPR Sam Morgan wrote: > On 5/9/2010 3:28 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: >> Sam, >> >> It is normal for the K3 display to go blank following each piece of a >> firmware load (the red TX light blinks once too).
