freq drift/front end KX3

va3bxg
1) i was trying to set up a dipole antenna to get my first QSO. i was on
40 m and as i was tinkering with my head ]phones
i noticed that i had a 0.1 drift on the LCD readout VFOA. the readout
had dropped by that much.. in fact it did more then once. i would tune
to a freq, and then listen (not touching anything) and without any other
change it would drift by itself???

2) another item. i removed all wires etc from the radio, and found that
there was a lot of noise. even my buddy, who has been a ham for many
years wondered what was happening. and what is happening.

thought i would ask the gurus here if they know what is going on?

Is yours a factory build or kit?  Mine's a kit and I while building it, the
full-turn spacing for the inside nut for the VFO encoder was a bit far for
mine to make contact.  I noticed that while adjusting the VFO, that it
would sometime wander even though I hadn't touched it.  In my case, I think
there was just a bit of play in the VFO and once I had it properly seated
and making clean contact the drifting disappeared.

Also does it do it after the radio has been on for a while, or only after
freshly powered up?  Even with a bit of play in my VFO, the wandering would
disappear after a few minutes of being powered on. (note my KX3 no longer
exhibits this behavior at all once I got my VFO issues sorted out).

funny you should mention that. i had to reseat the vfoa as the nut
holding the vfo in place on the front panel was completely lose. i had
hand tighten it and afterwards everything was ok.

i would say just the opposite. i noticed it after it had been turned for
awhile

Hi Robert,

This shouldn't happen if you adjust the VFO knob height so the bottom
of the knob is lightly touching the felt pad. I'm also looking at a
firmware change that would prevent the occasional 1-tic drift due to
physical asymmetry in the knob. Maintaining contact with the felt pad
would then be less of an issue.

The KX3's receiver has a lot of gain and excellent sensitivity. You
may simply have gains set at max, in which case you'll hear background
receiver noise. Typically you don't need the preamp on 160-40 meters;
if you turn it off, most of the noise should go away, and if you then
connect an antenna, atmospheric noise should completely dominate.

Let me know if you have further questions.
