high altitude solder

Jeremiah McCarthy
Kester 44HA will be available at any NASA facility commissary in the near future...The crew returning from the space station this week brought back 5,000 1 pound rolls that were taken up there in order to out-gas them for high altitude use...Prices will be high...

>I plan to do a lot of mountaintopping in the next few years and will
be assembling a K1 for this specific use. I need to locate a good
source for MILSPEC high altitude solder that meets Elecraft's
specifications and will not void the warranty. The reported 22%
increase in equipment efficiency will make the extra expense
worthwhile. Does anybody know of a vendor that still sells it? Are
there any special precautions or procedures for using this solder?<

Question regarding paddle wiring

Tom McCulloch
I have a K2 which, of course allows the user to switch between left handed
or right handed use of the CW paddles, so this question might seem academic,
and perhaps it is.

I have a question as to which way to wire my bencher paddles to conform with
any standard that might be out there.  Obviously the ground should go to the
ground portion of the plug,.  Can anyone tell me if the tip connection of
the plug generates the dots and the middle (is that considered the 'ring'?)
the dashes, or is the other way around?  As I said for he K2 it doesn't
matter, but if I use these paddles on a different rig, it might (I have
enough trouble sending righty, if I try sending left handed I'll really be
in trouble...hi).

Tnx for your help

Re: Question regarding paddle wiring

David A. Belsley
Tom:  These sorts of questions are really simply answered with
straightforward experiments.  Take a 1/8" stereo plug (or cable wired
to such a plug), use your ohm meter to determine which connector
(wire) goes to the tip, then (after placing the K2 in TEST mode)
short that connector (wire) to ground to hear whether you get dots or
dashes.   Recall, however, that even if you wire things backward, you
can reverse them through a menu selection.

best wishes,

Tom:
On my paddle, the tip represents the dit and I believe all of my rigs
are set to right-handed.

Re: Question regarding paddle wiring

Tom McCulloch
Hi John and all..

Thanks for you response.  I checked my K2 and when the left side of the
paddle is connected the tip of the plug, pressing the left side of the
paddle gives dits when the K2 menu is set to Normal (PDLn).  I don't know if
this is a standard but its what the K2 calls 'normal'

Thanks

I need to trot right up to NASA up the street and ask to trade my
recently acquired 50 rolls of Kester 44 for some of that HAHA, I saw
these messages about high altitude solder last night and never heard of
anything so dumb! April Fool's! 73 de Alex NS6Y
