jt65 help with k3 after xp software reinstall

KD8NNU
Dear Group

I just had to reload all my software on my xp machine that I use with my
k3 due to a nasty virus.

Anyway I used to be able to use JT65-HF 1.07 with no problems at all.
Now after my reinstall I am unable to make contacts.

When sending a CQ or responding to a call the TX light is on, the output
meters on the tuner and front panel show that I am transmitting the
correct power.  But no one hears me or responds.

I am able to use other digital modes with hrd and dm780 and hrd
controlls my PTT and it working.

I am really confused and frustrated, I have reloaded the software
several times, reloaded clock sync software and so on.

I have played with output settings on the ALC and it makes no
differencec, high watts out low qrp watts out and everything I can think
of.

Maybe there is a setting in the K3 where I have a TX offset, but I am on
DATA A which I have checked my TX is on A not B so I have no idea on
what to check next.

So I need some help if anyone has ideas.

Thanks
Don
KD8NNU

Don, this exact symptom can be caused by a clock that is not accurately
synced. Make sure your clock is within 1 second of the correct time as
provided by a server such as time.nist.gov.

Hi Tony,

I have reinstalled the clock sync software several times and tried
multiple clock sync software.

The decodes are spot on but no one responds.

Is there a possible conflict with a xp or windows clock sync program
that has to be disabled?

Re: jt65 help with k3 after xp software reinstall

Tony Estep
Hmmmm, sounds confusing, Don. Well, first let's make absolutely sure your
clock is right. Click "change time and date settings" to get a
second-by-second update. Then go to:

http://www.time.gov/widget.html

and make sure your time matches.

If the time is correct and you're transmitting some power, the next thing to
check is to make sure that the audio output of JT-65 is reaching your
transmitter. An easy way to do this is to set the K3 meter to show ALC; then
while transmitting, use the Windows volume control to keep advancing speaker
volume and watch the ALC bars. When you get it to 6, back off about 1 1/2
bars.

At that point, you are definitely sending properly synced JT65 -- at least I
can't think of any reason why not.

Hi Tony,

You are brilliant, after running the widget and playing with the windows
volume it started to work.

I always had alc movement and had it set but for some reason it now
works.   Not sure what it was that did the trick but none the less it is
now working.

I also reinstalled all my sound card drivers so that could have been it
also, however then I would have suspected that the non time sensitive
modes would have not been working.

So maybe it was the widget or volume reset but in any case after doing
all those things listed above I finally made a contact after spending
all day on this wonderful windows thing.

Well Don, it could be worse; you could have a software-defined radio with
virtual audio cables, virtual serial ports, 40 parameter settings for each,
unstable drivers, and a mysterious intermittent IRQ conflict. The future of
ham radio.

I'm good as I already have my k3 and xp still works now that the illness
is gone.

The bigger issue for the future is when they start attacking smart
phones with virus's.

Your description below sounds like the hw & sw that my company sells but
with all the hw its usally over 1m in cost.  So its always just a simple
configuration issue hi hi.

Again thanks for you help, as I got another state in the log that I was
missing.

Bad thing was early in the morning Australia was real stong on the mode
at my qth for the first time ever.

Have a great 4th of July Holiday.

Actually this is not what Electraft recommends.  You want to stay at
about 5 bars for stable power output in digital modes.

This is old thinking based upon a different rig design.

6 minus 1 1/2 bars is 4 1/2 bars, which is different than the
recommended 4 bars with the 5th bar flickering on and off how???

In any event, the question was about JT65HF, which transmits only 1 tone at
a time, hence according to its author can be amplified even by a class C
amp. You could have lots of bars without IMD because there's nothing to IM.
The key issue was whether or not Don could make the bars go up and down by
varying the audio output from his JT65 program, so he could be sure that he
was actually transmitting something. He's now up and running, so all's well
that ends well.
