k3 MCU flashing TX lockup

Gary Gregory-3
I am hoping somebody can help solve this.

I attempted to load the latest Beta software when suddenly the download failed.

Unable to communite with the K3 from the loader (latest version) and the power off to force a reset and download results in "Unable to communicate with K3" error msg appears.

The flashing yellow light appeared first, now extinguished, just the flashing red Tx light, unlit screen and MCU LD in the display.

Anyone have any suggestions to try next?

Gary,

If possible, use a real serial port instead of a USB/serial adapter.
If you are using a USB/serial adapter, plug it into a native USB port,
not into a hub.
Close K3 Utility and reboot the computer.
Remove the power cable from the K3 for at least 5 seconds
Hold the K3 power switch down for at least 10 seconds
Open K3 Utility and "Send All New Firmware".

If that does not cure things, check your computer serial connections -
try a new cable, etc.

Re: k3 MCU flashing TX lockup

Gary Gregory-3
Hi Guy's

I am using a serial cable, not had any problems b4 with downloads. Tried to download latest Beta when it all went south.

Repeated on/off has not helped so far.

Let me get this correct in my head.

1. turn off linear power supply.
2  wait 10 seconds.
3  Reboot windows xp pro

Should I start the utility 1st?...(I am using latest version) or the radio?

I am seeing the radio come on when I press the button and the led's are bright. If I keep holding the power button the radio comes on, no backlight just flashing red tx light and MCU LD on the display.

Thanks guys.

Re: k3 MCU flashing TX lockup

I have been using the K3 on PSK31 and I suspect the K3 is set for 19200 kbs, if so, I am guessing this is why the utility program cannot connect?

I have tried many times to reconnect and reset but no luck as yet.

Thanks,

Re: k3 MCU flashing TX lockup

Gary,

K3 utility sets the data rate of the K3 automatically, so that is not
the problem.  Look first at your computer (reboot), and your serial
cable (try another cable if possible).

Unable to do PSK

Roy Davis
In reply to this post by Don Wilhelm-4
I have a digital question.

I am using the ACC port on the K3 to do RTTY (FSK D).  I have a box that was
made for me with the appropriate parts for this function.  The cable with
the box from the ACC is connected to a com port on the computer.  Also I
have a audio cable (Stereo) connectors on each end going from the Line out
of the K3 to the Line In on my desktop computer.  It works very well on
RTTY.

I decided to try PSK, and have tried the following method without success.

Since theis cable worked with RTTY in FSK-D  I thought it should work for
PSK.  I tried the same setup with the K3 with DATA MD set to PSK-D 31 bps.
I am able to transmit a signal but I have been told there is no printout on
the receive end.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Roy - WK4Y

Re: Unable to do PSK

Don Wilhelm-4
Roy,

If your PSK application is generating (and expecting) soundcard output,
PSK D will not work.  For PSK D, you must have the Text Decode turned on
and the application must display the ASCII text.

If your application is using the soundcard, you must use DATA A.

Re: Unable to do PSK

Greg - AB7R
In reply to this post by Roy Davis
Hi Roy.  There is NO provision for transmitting PSK-D from the ACC
connector.  This feature is ONLY for using the paddles connected to the
paddle input.  If you are going to use a computer you have two options:

1.  Put the radio in PSK-D and decode with the software and send with the
paddles; or

2.  Put the radio in Data-A mode and have the software handle both decode
and encode.

Re: Unable to do PSK

Richard Ferch
In reply to this post by Roy Davis
Roy,

A bit of explanation may help:

When you transmit using FSK D, your RTTY program generates characters in the
5-bit Baudot (Murray) code at 45.45 bps and keys the FSK keying line to send
that code by shifting the transmitter's frequency between two frequencies
170 Hz apart.

PSK31 uses a completely different code (called Varicode) with
variable-length characters sent at 31.25 bps, which is used to modulate a
single frequency using phase-shift keying. The PSK31 software that is
commonly used with other radios generates PSK31 at audio frequency in a
sound card, needs an audio cable between the sound card line out and the
K3's line in, and uses the K3's DATA A mode.

I know of no application software that generates Varicode on a keying line
instead of using an audio signal. If you use an RTTY program to key the
radio in PSK D mode, no-one will be able to decode it because as far as I
know there is no software available to decode Baudot characters modulated
using phase-shift keying.

According to the help file, the K3 Utility can send PSK31 by sending ASCII
characters to the K3 over the RS-232 cable. In PSK D mode the K3's firmware
converts from ASCII to Varicode and phase-shift modulates the transmitted
signal. This would require no additional interfacing other than the serial
connection, although it would not actually use the cable you have connected
to the ACC port.

Note as well that in all three cases (FSK D, PSK D and DATA A), the normal
way to receive data signals without additional hardware is by decoding audio
with a sound card. The audio cable from the K3's line out to the sound card
line in is all you need to do this, and provided your software is capable
and set properly for the mode being decoded, you can use this same setup to
receive in all data modes. In FSK D and PSK D the K3 is also capable of
doing the decoding in the radio and sending the data to the computer as
ASCII over the RS-232 cable, but other than the K3 Utility there is no
software available to use this capability as far as I am aware.
