kpa100 with kat100-2

Saildjnich
I see some hams have combined the KPA100 with the KAT100-2 in a  separate
case. Is Elecraft planning on modifying these kits so they can be  assembled into
a case separate from the K2 without modifications?

I love my K2 with all of its features, including the internal battery. It
would be real handy to plug the radio into one module and  have the KPA100 with
the KAT100-2 available in the shack,  while keeping the battery powered K2 for
portable work. I am a little shy  about applying someone else's modifications
to my rig.

If Elecraft is not planning on offering these kits in this form, is there
someone's modifications that you would recommend?

Thanks for your help.

Dave, N2AWE

RE: kpa100 with kat100-2

Dave,

While full instructions are not available from Elecraft, it is a simple
matter to put the KPA100 and the KAT100 into an EC2 enclosure.  The KAT100-2
has all the 'hooks' required to plug the KPA100 into the KAT100 board.

There are no mods required to mount the current KPA100 externally - the mods
that you read about apply only to the initial KPA100 design, so if yours has
been upgraded (if R23 and L18 are jumpers, you have the upgrade installed -
the new kits have th upgrade integrated), all you need to do is plug it in
once you complete the KAT100-2.

I suggest you take a look at KK7P's excellent web page about doing
just what you described:  <http://www.kk7p.com/k2kpa100.html>.  The
only modification required to the K2 is to replace a choke with one
having a higher current capability (if one has an early KPA100, there
is a resistor mod, as well).

I've been thinking about doing this lately to have a QRP ready K2, but I built a
KAT100.  Does anyone have words of wisdom regarding converting to a KAT100-2?

Adding the additional connectors would be easy, so it seems the only minor
hassle would be unsoldering wires from the SO239 connectors.  This is assuming I
can buy an 'upgrade kit' with kat100-2 panels separately, though, and they don't
show up on the Elecraft spare parts page.

Thanks for any info,

Please disregard my last note.  I discovered Elecraft does indeed sell the
upgrade kit as KAT100PNL.

Don,

Just to clarify - does this include the mod to L1 on the KIO2 AUXBUS board
as explained on the KK7P web site? I found a contradiction to this mod on
KI6WX site. (Was or is there a possible current draw problem through L1)?

Thanks in advance,
Dave, W8FGU

Replacing L1 on the auxbus mod board can't hurt anything...

Dave Van Wallaghen
Hey Lyle,

I didn't think it would hurt to replace L1 - just thought maybe the problem
went away with my version (rev C) of the KPA100.

BTW - very nice explanation of separating the K2/KPA100 - I ordered the
parts yesterday to split mine. Thanks for the nicely detailed process.

Dave,

There isn't a contradiction between what Lyle and John describe.  Lyle was taking a conservative approach to the issue.  Nothing wrong with that.  John did some extensive tests and found it wasn't necessary.  Both approaches are equally correct.

Being lazy, and after reading John's test results I decided not to replace L1.  Eight months later I can say it wasn't necessary to replace L1.

As in most things Elecraft, there are more than one way to skin the cat.  The fact that we are offered a number of choices to arrive at our desired destination is a very good thing.

RE: kpa100 with kat100-2

Joe,

I guess contradiction was a little strong ;-) I just wasn't sure if the
later revs of the KPA100 eliminated the issue entirely.

I'm somewhat lazy as well and adhere to the KISS principal (most days) so I
was leaning with not replacing it. But then again, I'm pretty conservative
with regard to my equipment - so...

Always good to have choices :-)
