long-haired, dope-smoking, free-software hippie

Mike Sexsmith

"""I'm not a long-haired, dope-smoking, free-software hippie so if I have to
spend some money for good software I don't mind. (As a professional
programmer I've never understood why the product of my hard work should be
free when I have to pay for the product of everyone else's work.)"""

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Craig, Yes, my recommendations are to:

1. Show more discretion about "long hair" comments, a number of folks who
read this reflector have it and will find your posting offensive...
2. Along with many other software programs Ham Radio Deluxe is a freeware
product and is an excellent one. Your comment seems disparaging to both
those who use it, (thousands of folks), and those who choose to provide it
"free".
3. Perhaps consider an apology of some sort to the reflector?....

Second Craig's recommendation. I've been a software professional myself as long as
you've been a ham (and you started when you were 12), and in my experience
there's room for both free (as in either "free beer" *or* "free speech" or both)
and for-profit software in the the world.

I've used free code that was of excellent quality. I've also encountered
allegedly "professional" programming that was utter garbage. And while I use free tools quite a
bit, I just spent $500 for a Java development environment because it will help me do a better
job than the equivalant free products, some of which are quite good.

I suppose it would be nice if the quality of software could be judged soley on its price. But
Elecraft owners know that rule doesn't apply to radios either.

Deprecating comments about free-software advocates associate you with the likes of the
scoundrels at SCO. Consider that it does not do you credit.

Re: long-haired, dope-smoking, free-software hippie

Simon (HB9DRV)
The thread has ended up the way it did because I misunderstood Craig's
original post - he is not anti freeware. We discussed this off-list and
found we have a very great deal in common.

I am only pro Ham Radio freeware as Hams have a great ethos of helping each
other - as this forum proves. I am not a fan of Linux even though it's free
(must say fedora is rather good) and many of my customers use Linux.

You know, I kind of wanted to think that Mike's comments were,
maybe, tongue-in-cheek, but he is probably serious, which by the way, Craig
was not. And if a person can't distinguish between the the two, then I
suggest he/she has issues and needs to deal with them. Jeese, lighten up
folks...loosen the tie and top button.

My 2 cents

I have found that a sense of humor is unappreciated, especially on
certain "other" lists. I knew someone wojuld get their panties in a wad
when I saw the subject line.

My thanks to ALL the creators of Ham Software. (Except for Airmail and
Winlink, of course ;-)

Looks like this thread is starting to degenerate a bit. Let's let it rest for
