mics (D-104)

Don Rasmussen
Has anyone connected a preamplified D104 to either the
front or rear panel? Are there any added parts
required?

I've had my K3 for 3 weeks now and only a couple
fleeting thoughts about a microphone for it. ;-)

I've been using a D-104 that has the preamp in the base with a K-2 for
quite awhile. I do much more cw than ssb, but I've gotten quite a few
unsolicited compliments on the sound over the years.

I'm waiting for my K3 and am looking for ways to get ready. I have a
much-loved D-104 and I've kept it alive with Bob Heil's conversion kit using
an HC-5 element. I use it with my ICOM Pro3. What will I have to do to use
it with the K3?

Jerry,

All you need to do to use that HC-5 element with the K3 is change the
mic plug wiring.  AF to pin 1, PTT to pin 2, grounds to pins 7 and 8.  I
have the same arrangement here and it works fine.

I have been using the D-104 (with base pre-amp) on my K3 for several
weeks with some success.  However, there is an issue of which Eric is
aware....  Transients produced when the mic switch is pressed cause a
delay in the build-up of the audio.  A workaround is to increase
compression.  With compression set at zero there is a problem, otherwise
it can take several seconds for the audio to build up. The first few
words of an over can thus be missed.

There isn't a problem with the K2; the D-104 works fine.
