Their prices are too high Paul. I bought mine last year for 35
bucks. I think someone else said they found them for around 30. Not a recommendation, but Google came up with this one which has a
decent $$$. http://www.jewelerssupplies.com/optivisor-binocular-magnifier.html I thought I bought mine from these folks but don't see the loupe or light listed any longer, so I'm not sure it's the same source. Every time I see a picture of that OptiVisor head vise torture device I
cringe. If you're wearing reading glasses for close-up work already then for the same price this is a significantly better solution: http://www.wassco.com/mag.html. They're made by Bausch & Lomb, they're very high-quality, they work great, and they don't require the use of midieval head clamping technology. Do you use them? Do they 'stay put' and not tip when bending over the work? I've been wearing an OptiVisor for close work for over 20 years now (and wearing it often!) I've never found it to be uncomfortable. The screw-adjustable padded headband keeps 'em secure without any "tight" feeling to me. Indeed, when I flip the hood with the lenses up I tend to forget I have it on. But then, my Stetson isn't uncomfortable either, even if I wear it all day. Clearly some people don't tolerate things on their heads very well. If they tend to flop around on your head, then adding some extra weight out front isn't going to help. They work fine for me. Depending on what I'm looking at I can alternate between looking over the top of the glasses and through the magnifiers, or alternate between looking through the magnifiers and "under" the magnifier (but still through the glasses). I don't find myself taking them off or sliding them around at all, but again it depends on how badly you need your glasses. Well Mother Nature has a way of disrupting plans. The planned W1ACT trip to Martha's Vineyard went as planned. We arrived by Ferry Thursday night. We set up our tents and main camper at the Gay Head light house. Next morning was overcast and cool. We could see 360 degrees of horizon! I set up my QRP station using the VBWFP and AT Sprint-3. >From my tent, I worked about a dozen stations from Canada, Europe and stateside. Then it started to happen. First came the winds, sustained @ 25 to 35 MPH. After dusk, came the rain, heavy wind driven rain. During the night it became progressively worst. During the day Saturday the rain finally stopped but the worst of the winds was to come. During that time we almost lost one tent (badly bruised) and one tower (snapped at 3 places). We rode out gusts to 74 MPH! (a ham brought his wx station). The remainder of Sunday was still windy. Thank goodness the ferry was running so we could leave. We did more batting down than operating. We did manage to participate in the NE QSO 'test. Pix will be available at W1ACT web site soon.
