order of KX1 build

John Shadle
I have recently come into possession of a "full" KX1 (S/N 1601)
(including the paddle, 30m/80m board, and ATU). I did the inventory
yesterday and everything checked out.

[Well, there was one issue... L9 (100uH RF choke) was a "min." rather
than a "micro" (so it is slightly *larger* than it should be). Is this a
size-sensitive part?]

In any case, I'm excited to get started on it tonight or this weekend,
but was wondering if those of you who have built the KX1 before could
offer some advice.

I know that there are some parts to remove on the KX1 board when I add
the 30m/80m board (and perhaps the ATU?) so do you suggest that I build
the 30m/80m board first and mark the steps on the KX1 build where I
should not stuff parts to avoid removing parts later?

OR

Should I build the full KX1, make sure all is working, and then remove
parts according to the 30m/80m kit build?

I'm leaning towards the former (build the 30m/80m board and then the
KX1) as I am not excited about doing re-work. Suggestions or experience
would be great to hear from you KX1 owners/builders.

Thanks.

RE: order of KX1 build

Craig Rairdin
Personally I would want to make sure the basic KX1 is working before adding
the 30/80 module. Someone else can address whether or not the incremental
tests you do while building would work if you left the affected parts off
the board.

You'll want a good desoldering tool for the rework.

I'm about to get a KX1 also and found some interesting
links on the build...

John,

Build the base KX1 and ATU first and test it, then add the KXB3080.  The
KX1 will not work if you leave out the parts that are to be changed for
the KXB3080.

Look at the Elecraft website Builder's Resource page to see how to mount
that inductor - the micro ones are no longer available.
