Is the following an urban legend or has it some validity? I do not subscribe to CQ mag so can not confirm its appearance there. If true it would be a cataclysmic blow to amateur radio. Fellow Amateur Radio Operators, If you don't subscribe to CQ magazine, in the April Issue (pg 28) is an article that is a bit disturbing. The article was written by Professor Emil Heisseluft who is currently in Geneva, Switzerland, consulting with his European colleagues at the Large Hadron Collider on his specialty, the Higgs bosom. Professor Heisseluft obtained this information while on a trip to Washington, DC and the halls of congress. I will give you a short recap. Draconian cuts in the federal budget for FY2012 portend significant staffing cuts in the FCC that will drastically impact the Amateur Radio and Amateur Satellite Services. Among other things, operators using the 160-6 meter bands will be limited to operating on odd or even days of the week, depending on the numeral in their callsign. If the number is even you get even numbered days and odd, odd number days. New-issue vanity callsigns will become a thing of the past along with special event callsigns. The wait time for reissuance of a callsign for a "Silent Key" will be extended from two to five years. This will be imposed without the usual Notice of Proposed Rule Making because of the emergency nature of the matter. Interesting. When this goes into effect I would not be able to talk to another Ham Radio Operator in the U.S. with an odd callsign. Emergency communications on HF would become a problem along with HF net activities. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Probably worth pointing out that "heisse luft" is German for "hot air".
Don't think I'd lose too much sleep over this one.

Heisse Luft! Heisse Sch*****! This was the ***APRIL*** edition.
According to the editors, the article engendered a blizzard of queries by worried ops. I suppose it will circulate for years on the internet... In honor of the political nonsense going on in Washington, I think it would be a
good idea for Amateur Radio Magazines to declare a moratoreum of April Fool Articles for the duration (forever?) because it is too difficult to tell an April Fool Article from the real thing coming from Washington.
