Hello...
I have two K3s, sn0050 and sn2067; both have been back to you all for all updates etc. They are identical except for 0050 having the internal two meter converter board. Yesterday, I was attempting to get 0050 connected to a new laptop running WSJT software (JT65a). The laptop had the Prolific drivers installed to work with your USB to serial cable. The systems recognize one another and all seemed happy enuff. There is a feature of the WSJT software that gives a command to the K3 to go from RX to TX. There are also some audio connections required, but I had not yet made those. So when I depressed the 'Transmit' button on the computer JT65a screen, the K3 did in fact go into transmit.....but, it was also transmitting a full-power carrier (into dummy load)...which it is not supposed to do. I double checked all of the menu settings on the K3, but could not find any clues as to what was causing the carrier on transmit. No cables plugged into the key or paddle jacks. Then I switched to K3 #2067 for a comparison; it performed as it is supposed to: when 'transmit' button depressed in software on computer, radio switched from RX to TX and no carrier transmitted. Wonder what could be different in the two radios? I can still substitute 2067 for 0050 on my dxpedition coming up in June, but really would like to figure out what's up with 0050 so I can have a spare. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Dick, this could be something really simple: if the K3 is in CW mode when
you switch to transmit with JT65, it will transmit a full carrier as you noted. If it's in USB mode, it will behave as expected. Been there, done that. Could be something else, but check the simple stuff first. 73, Tony KT0NY -- "We don't want every single college grad with mathematical aptitude to become a derivatives trader." -- Barack Obama ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I double checked all This is WSJT asserting both RTS and DTS when you put it into transmit, despite you setting the config for it to use only one. Guess your K3 recognizes one of them as CW Key? Fixing WSJT involves patching and recompiling. Maybe easier if one of the K3 config options can be set to ignore the unwanted rs232 signal. Dick,
Were you in DATA mode? And, in addition -- What Data sub-mode did you have selected? If it was something other than DATA A (or AFSK A), yes it is quite possible that the K3 would produce a carrier. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/23/2011 9:08 AM, Dick Hanson wrote: > Hello... > > I have two K3s, sn0050 and sn2067; both have been back to you all for all > updates etc. > They are identical except for 0050 having the internal two meter converter > board. > > Yesterday, I was attempting to get 0050 connected to a new laptop running > WSJT software (JT65a). > The laptop had the Prolific drivers installed to work with your USB to > serial cable. > The systems recognize one another and all seemed happy enuff. > > There is a feature of the WSJT software that gives a command to the K3 to go > from RX to TX. > There are also some audio connections required, but I had not yet made > those. > > So when I depressed the 'Transmit' button on the computer JT65a screen, the > K3 did in fact go into transmit.....but, it was also transmitting a > full-power carrier (into dummy load)...which it is not supposed to do. > I double checked all of the menu settings on the K3, but could not find any > clues as to what was causing the carrier on transmit.
