Hah! - No sub RX or second VFO control, and they seem to have stolen the

Re: rather provocative advert from Kenwood

Gary Gregory
Interesting advertising by ML&S....

Would have thought that even ML&S would have recognised by now that when you
want to promote a product you get more buyer response when the advertising
is of a positive nature.

If they feel that to sell their "new" product they have to use a negative
advert, then I think they may find it doesn't work as well as they might
hope..

I wonder if they truly think that K3 owners are going to sell their K3's to
buy a Kenwood?

Kenwood still have to produce their radio and independant testing will show
if indeed they got it right.

The TS-480SAT is not what I would call a great radio and yes I sold mine,
the K3 is a great radio that is still evolving and being improved. I don't
expect Kenwood will update their firmware too much after they are enter
production. The TS-570 was also not what I would call a great radio, better
than the IC-718 I found, but not in the class of any Elite radio.

They will need to greatly improve their DSP user adjustments and do it far
better than the TS-480 rigs which I found terrible to use. I decided to try
the TS-480 I had for a week and not turn on the K3 as I was hopeful the
TS-480 would make a good backup and mobile rig..I became disheartened after
a few days and put it on e-bay. No regrets here.

Let's see, now. While Yaesu was making FT-1000s, 9000s, and now 5000s; and
ICOM was making 7800, 7600 and 7700; Kenwood was selling its unimpressive
TS-2000. Now, we're supposed to believe that they've suddenly got religion
and are challenging the K3? Yeah, right. And, even if they actually made a
radio that has decent specs, does anyone really want to deal with Kenwood
customer service? In my opinion, the best radios Kenwood ever made were
the TS-830 and TS-850. Then, it stopped caring. And, so did I...about
Kenwood products, anyway.

Re: rather provocative advert from Kenwood

George Thornton
In reply to this post by Kevin Rock
It is inevitable that the competitors would notice the success of the K3
and respond competitively.   Kenwood used to make quality HF radios but
long ago lost their way.  I would be interested in seeing a review when
one comes out.

In my travels I think there are a number of people who object to the K3
because they like the larger face and more traditional controls such as
individual band and mode registers.  Most of these HAMS have not
actually operated much with a K3. In my limited experience the controls
you most want to use while operating are right there and ready for quick
use in the K3.  It may be slightly slower to change modes or bands, but
it is not that big a deal.

I think there may be a market for an add-on module that sits next to the
K3 and offers more button and knob options.  This may sway the more
traditional.  We might speculate as to what we want, but I would
certainly add individual mode and band pushbuttons.

I envisage a box identical in size to the P3, so you would have your add
on module on one side, the K3 in the center and the P3 on the other.

It won't work any better than the K3, but it will look impressive for
those looking for the biggest box with the largest number of controls
and buttons.

Re: rather provocative advert from Kenwood

Gary Gregory
The suggestion that K3 owners should consider placing their K3 on e-bay is
not necessary.

Perhaps they might have considered that many HAMs own more than one radio
and more emphasis could have been placed on "adding" the new Kenwood to
their station rather than implying that K3 owners sell their K3 to fund a
Kenwood purchase even before the full specifications of the new Kenwood have
been published and prior to release of the TS-590.

I thought it odd that ML&S found it necessary to even mention the Elecraft
radio.

I can't imagine what they hoped to achieve other than to promote the new
Kenwood offering as the "best" radio available.

Independant testing (Sherwood Labs, RSGB etc) will no doubt run their tests
and if the Kenwood rates close to or even tops their list then this will do
more for Kenwood sales than any advertising a dealer may make.

I may have missed previous advertisements in the past where resellers have
advertised a specific brand/model over another one. I can only assume that
in this case ML&S sell major brands but as they do not sell Elecraft they
felt it necessary to promote the idea of K3 owners selling their K3's and
buying a product from ML&S.

Whilst you/some may think I am being critical of ML&S, I would say that at
first read I felt it odd that the K3 got a mention.

Given my past work history it is not the wording I would have used. Further,
I would have accentuated the positives of the new product I was advertising
with no reference to any other manufacturer whether I was a reseller of
those brands or not.

I was simply making a comment and I make no apologies.

Re: rather provocative advert from Kenwood

In reply to this post by DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
Congratulations to Wayne, Eric, and the whole Elecraft team!  One of
the "big three" have publicly declared the K3 to be the one to beat.
When your competitors start knocking you by name in their
advertisements, you know you've made it.

I completely agree with you on the TS-830 and TS-850 - both excellent
rigs and nothing Kenwood has done since comes close.  I kind of liked
the TS-480 but eventually sold it.  I would think the TS-590 might be
pretty good.  It will be interesting though to see what the price comes
out as.

I like the fact that the K3 is now "the one to beat".

Also, I think this isn't so much directed at current K3 owners (we know
better), but at those that might consider moving to the K3 from the
Yeacomwood lines.  Also, as they don't sell K3s, it makes a comparison it
claims is favorable without upsetting their suppliers.

I hope everyone realizes that this is NOT a Kenwood ad.  It's just a
particular British store's 'provocative' ad.

Ergonomics was : Re: rather provocative advert from Kenwood

Pete Smith N4ZR
In reply to this post by George Thornton
As a brand new K3 owner, I find complaints about front panel ergonomics
pretty funny.  My previous high-end radio was a Yaesu Mark 5, and its
ergonomics were just terrible.  In designing the original 1000MP, Yaesu
made some of the most absurd design choices in their placement of
important controls, such as the RF power control, the sub-RX audio gain,
and the RIT.  Then, seemingly in order to avoid having to make up a new
front panel casting, they shoehorned the Mark 5's new filter selection
and DSP scheme in where it didn't belong.  Chaos!

I find the K3's design almost entirely intuitive.  It comes the closest
of any radio I have owned in my 55 years on the air to being a seamless
connection between me and the band I'm working.  Well done, guys!

Does anyone else feel this looks like a left-handed radio?

I personally would not like the keypad to the left of the tuning knob.
