rf gain

terry220
hi
i have just received my k3 from waters&stanton here in the uk.i have a slight problem
with the rf gain on receive if you turn the rf gain contril fully clockwise the signal goes
in negative mode instead of peeking it goes in reverse.it peeks when control is set to
about 12 o"clock strange is there an easy fix for this

Try running the parameter initialization process, following the instructions on page 66 of the latest owners manual.  My K3 had this behavior at one time and it was corrected by running EE INIT.

I would discourage one from arbitrarily doing an EEINIT" unless you have
a stored K3 configuration file that you can load afterward.

EEINIT sets all menu items back to the default settings.  It may be
necessary, but do know that you will have a lot of calibration to do
unless you have that configuration file with the settings from a known
good working time for your K3 (goes for KX3 too).

Hi Terry,

Try running the RF Gain calibration from the K3 Utility Program.

Yes, Don, an EE INIT is not something one should do "arbitrarily".  It did fix a similar non-linear RF gain problem of that myself and others reported on this reflector back in 2010, so I suggested it as a solution.

The process in the owners manual makes clear that a saved configuration is a very important step if one does not want to undertake a lot of parameter setting and calibration.

As to running the RF gain calibration, this did not solve the non-linearity for me, but the EE INIT did.

Terry,

Here is a link to a 2010 thread about this issue:
http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Rf-gain-tracking-main-vs-sub-td5668917.html

The thread doesn't document the resolution (for me, EEINIT), unfortunately, but there is an interesting graph of the behavior by one of the contributors (HB9BRI) who also experienced the issue.

Perhaps there is some information in the thread that will be of help.

Did you verify that the behavior is still present after an EEINIT but BEFORE you reloaded your configuration? (I'm assuming that you did an EEINIT, of course).
