rx audio output K2

Mike Baird
I was wondering what position most K2 users set their AF gain control for comfortable listening.  My K2's AF gain must be set at about 1-2 o'clock to be able to hear anything.  This is the same for internal as well as for various external spkrs.  Most of my other radios need the gain only at about 9-10 o'clock for comfortable listening.

Thanks.

RE: rx audio output K2

Ron D'Eau Claire-2
In a quiet shack, listening to the speaker, mine runs about 9 to 10 o'clock
for plenty of audio, using the internal speaker. It's more in the range of 8
o'clock using the 'phones. That's assuming AGC is ON and the RF gain is full
up.

Of course, a noisy location will change things dramatically!

Is yours the same for both speaker and phones? If it's only on speaker, do
you have the speaker wired correctly? If you reversed the leads to the
speaker itself it'll dramatically reduce the audio because the audio line
will be shorted through the case ground.

Mine is usually set at about 8 o'clock and it is quite loud. The audio drops
a lot if I disable the DSP. I'm using my K2 only for SSB.

Mike,

My K2's AF gain is set at about 8 or 9 o'clock and is at a comfortable
level for me.  (My shack is a quiet room in the back of the house.)

Generally, though, I don't use the K2's speaker.  I have a couple rigs
and SWL radio whose external speaker outputs are hooked up to a little
Behringer mixer board so that I can use a single external speaker in the
shack.  You might consider something similar if you have more than one
radio.  It's nice because you can set the rigs at a level comfortable
when using the internal speaker in a stand alone set up but also set the
mixer board levels so that all rigs sound more or less than same through
the external speaker.  Then you have a single slider to adjust all rig
volume levels.  It's a convenience, definitely not a necessity.  But
it's also not expensive so maybe food for thought.

Could your AGC be too agressive? What happens to AF gain as you turn AGC off
(Press AGC and PRE/ATT simultaneously). If gain increases considerably the
pot on the back of the control board needs some adjustment.

This topic comes up many times over and over on the reflector.  If you radio
is properly aligned and built you should have plenty of rx audio with the
volume set at 8 or 9 o'clock.  In the past the major problem has been those
that don't have the AGC properly set and thus the AGC is reining in the
received signals.  The easiest test to see if you have the AGC set properly
is to just turn it off and if you have an increase in volume you are not
properly set.

RE: rx audio output K2

Isn't the position of the AF gain (volume?) dependent on the position of the
RF gain knob?  As I turn the "RF gain" knob clockwise, the AF gain (volume)
increases.  So it seems that the position of the AF gain knob is variable
with respect to the RF gain.

Just to get another thread going about this, I would ask where you best
position the RF gain knob when operating?

RE: rx audio output K2

In reply to this post by Gregg R. Lengling
One small correction on the AGC pot setting ---
If the volume increases with NO ANTENNA connected and you turn the AGC off,
then the AGC Threshold is set too high.

If there are signals being received, you are likely to have some AGC action
unless all signals in the passband are extremely weak, so when an antenna is
connected you should always hear some difference between AGC on and AGC off
even if all you are hearing is band noise.
