Julie Royster

split question

Wise Group people, I must have something set wrong because when trying to
work split with the K3 sub receiver, I get the DX station in the left ear
but do NOT hear the pileup in the right ear (no audio in right ear). I have
read the manual and the extra book but cannot figure out what is wrong. Any
clues?
Does this depend on a menu setting I have not discovered?

Hi Julie,
You probably have SPKRS=1. With that setting, and the Sub ON, you get
mixed main and sub audio in the left earphone only and with the sub off,
main in the left only.
Try setting SPKRS=2.

OK, Julie.
Well the next thing to try is check the L-MIX-R configuration setting.
It may be set to A-A. You want it to be A-b

Hope this aren't stupid suggestions, but just in case; check....

* that the SUB is actually on - SPLIT doesn't turn the SUB on - you
must see the SUB indicator on the display
* SUB RF gain is turned up
* SUB AF gain is turned up
* Sub-RX antenna selection

Although not relevant to the problem being solved, for DX pileups I suggest A-Ab. That
gives you the DX in both ears and the pileup only in the right. It's just as easy to
distinguish, but makes it easier to hear weak DX.

Or if, as I do, you prefer to work split with your transmitter on VFO A
and the DX on VFO B, you could set L-MIX-R to Ab-b to get a similar
effect (DX in both ears, the pileup only in the left).

Working "reverse split" like this means you don't have to press SPLIT,
so you are less likely to transmit on the DX station's frequency by
mistake. It also means you use the VFO A knob to tune around in the
pileup, instead of the smaller VFO B knob. I also prefer having my
panadapter display centered on my transmit frequency instead of on the
DX frequency.

This method only works if you have a subRX. Also, some logging software
doesn't understand this setup and logs the TX and RX frequencies
incorrectly, in which case you may have to go back and adjust them in
your log afterwards. And if you use the DX Cluster to find the DX, your
software may want to set you up for normal split with SPLIT on.
Switching over to reverse split requires you to tap A/B and turn SPLIT
off (or use a macro to do them both at once). TANSTAAFL.
