switching a heath amp

riese-k3djc
Gang

the heath series of amps use bial voltage to switch the thing from T/R
and That amounts to 130 +- volts
would the K3 be Ok switching this or should I look to add an additional
relay
and switch that

Re: switching a heath amp

Dave Hachadorian
I used the K3 to switch my SB-220 backup amp (+130 VDC) a couple
months ago.  It worked fine through an entire contest.  The K3
spec is +200 VDC at 5 amps. I did put a reverse diode across the
relay line to prevent the possibility of negative inductive
kickback.  Actually, I put the diode right at the K3 via an RCA
wye with the diode soldered across one leg of the wye.  It was an
emergency deal, but it worked fb.

Bob,

If that voltage is for certain positive, the answer is yes, the K3 will
switch it, but if it is negative, connect your other relay.

Hi Don and Bob,

One alternative is to put in a mod to the Heathkit amp.

http://www.harbachelectronics.com/main/page_products_sb200__sb201.html

I put one of the soft key mods into my SB-200. Easy to put in and works
nicely.

The problem is that many "high voltage" amplifiers have significant
relay current and no current limiting or reverse EMF ('catch") diode
and often exhibit a large *negative* spike when the relay opens.

An external relay or a "buffer" like Ampkeyer, Ameritron ARB-704,
WB9KZY "Keyall", etc. is a good insurance policy.  A relay or buffer
is required with any negative voltage (SB-200, FL-2100, FL-2100B, etc.)
key lines.

May be worth the additional key relay,, my Kenwood TL 922 quit and I can
barely move it
let alone try to repair it,,, Not sure what to do wit it but that is
another story
I keyed another SB200 with an ICOM rig and built a little 5 volt key
relay
but it used an external wall wart. I may dig up a 9 volt relay and key it
using a 9 v battery
may pick up a heath SB220 fer 60 bux from a local shouldnt be able to
tell the diff
600 v 1200 watts
