I must travel by airline with my K3. I would really appreciate some advice as to 1] What to pack it in [the built in handle is nice but I think I need a case to protect front and rear panels] 2] How to get through airport security? DO they expect me to switch it on? - no power supply. Remove any panels? Or do they just do the swab test for explosives - no problem. eric VA7DZ -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Eric,
I've always carried mine in a backpack, cushioned with bubble wrap, towels, etc. It's been set aside by TSA and run through the scanner by itself, and swabbed, but never had a problem. Never been asked to turn it on (I don't carry the PS). TSA at SFO seems to spot it, but they never do leaving Aruba with it. 73, andy, ae6y, p49y -------------------------------------------------- From: "eric manning" <[hidden email]> Sent: Saturday, August 14, 2010 3:48 PM To: <[hidden email]> Cc: "William Bush" <[hidden email]> Subject: [Elecraft] travel with a K3 > Gang > > I must travel by airline with my K3. > > I would really appreciate some advice as to > > 1] What to pack it in [the built in handle is nice but I think I need a > case to protect > front and rear panels] > > 2] How to get through airport security? I hauled a K3 through several domestic and international airports. No
problems. In the U.S., pull it out like it is a laptop and run it in a separate plastic tray. I usually carry mine in one of Rose Kopp's bags. 73, Lyle KK7P > I must travel by airline with my K3... ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
I'm having an issue where my Control/QSY encoder seems bad. When I turn it fast I'm finding that my marker is jumping the opposite direction than I'm turning it, or it slows and speeds up, or all of the mentioned. Is this a new bug, or is this looking like I already have a bad encoder knob??? ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Fixed in newer firmware. Should be released soon.

It's more obvious that I'm carrying something 'interesting' than if I were using a backpack or one of Rose's nice cases, but it's more protective against knocks from fellow passengers squeezing their linear amplifier transformers into the same overhead locker ... No worries with airport security so far. Mostly they are just interested to know what it is. I carry my amateur radio license paperwork with me in case they need more evidence, and I should probably take the Elecraft receipt too in case the customs people ever take an interest. 73 Gary ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
I've made two trips to the Bahamas with my K3. I travel with with the radio
and switching power supply in my roll-aboard suit-case, using my clothes as the padding. At worst the TSA agents have removed the radios and swabbed them for explosives. About 50% of the time, they go through with just an x-ray. Some of the TSA guys are familiar with amateur radio, as they are using MARS as for back-up communications; we've given several VE tests in the Albany area for TSA staff as a pre-cursor to MARS licensing. BTW, there is even less of a fuss from the customs folks in the Bahamas. Almost all of them have heard of ham radio and may even be able to point out the active operators on the islands.
