FWIW... In rev-3.57  my K3 was typically locking 5-6 Hz above the zero
beat carrier. That seems to have been cut in half with this revision,
now locking 2-3 Hz above carrier.

All India Radio carrier at 9869.986 KHz locks in AM Sync at .988-.989.
(All India Radio transmitters seem to be consistently about 15 Hz
low.)

When I was a kid I dreamed of having a SW receiver that was accurate
to within 5 KHz, heheh....

Didn't have any problems with loading the F/W.

Some SWBC stations can be pretty far off freq. All India Radio is
consistently about 10 or 12 Hz low.

I had my first ever problem with this update too. K3 Utility reported several retries then gave up. K3 frozen with upload message on display, had to switch power supply off. Scary, isn't it?

Second attempt went with no problems. I think the cause was I was doing some web browsing during the upload. Normally I just let the update utility do its thing and don't touch the 'puter till it's finished.

I guess if something else takes a bit too much CPU a buffer underrun may occur and mess up the upload. I'll know better in future. You'd think Microsoft would have learned how to make a multi-tasking operating system by now ...

Re: K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.59: Misc. improvements

Guy, K2AV
In reply to this post by wayne burdick
In 3.59 -- Sync AM listening to music on HF BC, the sync search usually
kicks in and resettles at the bottom of a carrier fadeout, which will almost
always involve a near 180 degree phase shift at the bottom. The transition
is MUCH better than 3.58 for listening to music, the one or two cycle "woop"
neatly blending into the other spectral changes at the bottom of the fade,
MINUS the no-carrier distortion.

I found myself enjoying a story reading on 7440 (?, didn't write it down)
where using the shift to listen on the upper side got rid of some grindy
stuff on low side, and the considerable fades were handled.

<-Nice->     :>)

On the firmware loads...

Standard advice if any firmware load issues, on PC shut down all programs
except the utility, do nothing else when loading firmware. Do NOT try to
load firmware with the download as a virtual directory. If the utility
starts up funny, takes too long, or comes up on 9k serial speed, kill it and
restart it.

When the utility comes up quick and clean, start the firmware, get up and
take a break.  Leave PC alone, don't touch, no browsing, no mouse moves.

When it's done, kill the utility, power off the K3 for at least 15 seconds.
THEN power on and see how it's working.

Various occasional wierdness has ceased since rigidly sticking to this
policy.  Windows has always been hostile to timing sensitive hardware
drivers and utilities.

Re: K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.59: Misc. improvements

Dick Dievendorff
The K3 Utility reads each .hex file into RAM (and validates it there) before
starting to send it to the K3. If the file is unreadable because of a
network glitch, we want to discover that before beginning a firmware load.
This was fixed almost a year ago.

I had the same loud pop and crackle with s-meter pegging out when I
turned on power to the K3 today.  It was previously set on Radio NZ
freq and AM sync was enabled when I turned it off this morning before
leaving on a road trip.  I re-loaded 3.59 late this afternoon and now
all seems to be ok.  I tried turning off the K3, leaving it on AM with
sync enabled and it did not pop and crack plus the S-meter did not peg
out.  I must have had a faulty upload the first time.  I have to admit
while uploading the firmware I was doing other things on the computer
so maybe it was due to my fiddling.  I'll check it out again early in
the morning, but everything seems to be ok now.  In fact it appears
the sync is locking faster and more steady now.  Keeping fingers
crossed.

Re: K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.59: Misc. improvements

Guy, K2AV
In reply to this post by Dick Dievendorff
My take on this would be that although the PC copy of the file is
fine, that Winders is glitching the send from the PC to the K3 by not
paying rapt attention to the one and only timing dependent app running
at the time, and somehow dropping stuff.  The procedure previously
outlined has kept firmware loads pristine.

During firmware uploads, I don't even touch the mouse! May be safer to just

chen dave
Yesterday night, I upgraded to 3.59, I don't know why, but upload speed is
very very slow.

Fortunately, firmware works just fine.

K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.66: AF output protection

wayne burdick
Administrator
In reply to this post by wayne burdick
K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.66 (with DSP rev. 2.48) is now
available.

AF Output Protection: The DSP now senses when AF output would be so
strong as to drive the speaker or headphone amplifier into the
clipping range. If this happens, AF is muted until you reduce signal
levels, protecting your ears (and transducers).

Normally, this will only happen if you turn off AGC while an extremely
strong signal is present. If you hear the receiver mute under these
circumstances, simply reduce gain by some means (back down RF GAIN,
turn off the preamp, turn on the attenuator, or turn AGC ON).

Another possible source of excessive audio is a DSP numeric overrange.
DSP code has been changed to eliminate such cases, and we've had over
100 K3 users field-testing this new code with no reported AF
anomalies. But the new AF output protection is always in effect, so it
acts as a backup.

Please send any questions to [hidden email]. For instructions
on how to load beta firmware, see:

      http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

Wayne

That's a great feature; can't wait to try this out at home.  I've been
deafened more than once by accidentally turning off the AGC!

Thanks Wayne and crew.

Re: K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.66: AF output protection

Works....Sounds like an old time telegraph sounder clicking away.
Is there any means to disable it in the menu?
Before, with AGC off, a static pulse would hit and just produce a distorted
click but I could still copy cw. Now it completely blanks out everything.
I'm not too sure I like this feature.

That's why it's a beta release :)  We're seeking additional input on
this revision and will make an adjustment to the behavior ASAP.

Both 3.66 and 3.67 appear to be available as Beta downloads. I haven't yet
installed 3.66. Should I skip it and move on to 3.67?

K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.68: Changes applicable to AGC OFF

wayne burdick
Administrator
In reply to this post by wayne burdick
K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.68 (with DSP rev. 2.49) is now
available.

This revision primarily affects those who turn AGC off. In the
previous beta release (3.66), the new AF output protection feature was
a bit too aggressive in the AGC OFF case, causing the audio output to
occasionally become muted. The threshold has been moved up so that
this shouldn't happen.

If you turn AGC OFF, you should also set up the AF limiter (CONFIG:AF
LIM). (This limiter has no effect when AGC is on.) Recommended values
are 18-24. Some experimentation will be necessary due to differences
in headphones and user preference.

Please send any questions to [hidden email]. For instructions
on how to load beta firmware, see:

      http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.76 (with DSP rev. 2.52) is now
available.

This revision has something for just about everyone, but especially
those who use NR (noise reduction), and those who have (or will soon
have) a K144XV 2-meter module. See release notes below.

Please send any questions to [hidden email]. For instructions
on how to load beta firmware, see:

MCU 3.76 / DSP 2.52, 1-23-2010

Changes related to K144XV, transverters, FM, and repeaters:

* REPEATER REVerse: If a repeater offset is in use (+/-),
holding REV switches VFO A to the repeater's input frequency.

* RF POWER BARGRAPH: Now shows *tenths of a milliwatt* when
using low-level transverter I/O (applies to both the K144XV and
external transverters). 10 bars = about 1.00 mW at the IF. This
corresponds to about 10 W output when using the K144XV.

* COARSE TUNING WITH XVTR OFFSETS:  Fixed problem with
VFO display when using COARSE tuning steps in combination
with a non-zero transverter frequency offset (CONFIG:XVn OFS).

* IMPROVED FM RECEIVE: FM demodulation algorithm
refined to reduce signal distortion.

* FM SQUELCH: No longer opens briefly during memory recall.

* "ANT3" REMINDER WHEN K144XV SELECTED: If you switch
to a band configured for use with the Elecraft K144XV internal 2-m
module, “ANT3” is flashed to remind you to use the separate
BNC antenna jack provided on the fan panel, rather than ANT1/2.

Other new features and improvements:

* NR (NOISE REDUCTION) ON/OFF: This is now saved
on a per-band/per-receiver basis (same as NB). NR ADJ
(noise reduction setting) is stored independently for each mode.

* TX MESSAGE MEMORY ERASE:  To completely erase a
transmit message buffer, tap REC, then M1-M4, then CLR.
Note that erasing a CW/DATA memory will not erase a DVR
Message assigned to the same M1-M4 switch, and vice-versa.

* ERR PTT & ERR KEY (rig keyed at power-up): These error
conditions no longer lock out the POWER switch.

* DELAYED MEMORY RECALL (M>V): In CONFIG:MEM 0-9,
tap '1' to select "M>V NOR" or "M>V DLY". NOR is the default,
resulting in “live” memory recall as you rotate VFO A. In the "DLY"
case, the receiver is not updated until you tap M>V a second
time to exit memory recall. You may prefer “DLY” if you have
external gear that switches as the K3 changes bands.

* 40-M TX RANGE EXTENDED TO 7.650 MHz (12 W MAX): TX
near the first I.F. has always been disabled from 7.550 to 8.990
MHz to protect the 8.21 MHz trap on the KAT3 or KANT3 module.
At power settings of 12 W or lower, the upper limit is now 7.650
MHz, allowing use of some additional MARS channels.

Remote Control Command Changes:

* XF/XF$ COMMAND ADDED: Returns crystal filter number (1-5)
presently selected for main (XF) and sub receiver (XF$). GET only.
Not usable during BSET or REVerse.

* SQUELCH STATUS ADDED TO IC COMMAND: Byte e,
bits 4 (main RX) and 3 (sub RX). 1 = squelched. (Works for both
FM and non-FM squelch.)

* SUB RX NR STATUS ADDED TO IC COMMAND: Byte e, bit 2.

EEINIT (EEPROM Initialization) Changes:

    - PL deviation (FM) set to 0.36 kHz (was 0.00)
    - Power output set to 5/50 W (was 0)
    - CONFIG:SPLT SV set to YES
    - RTTY mark tone set to 2125 Hz (was 1275)
