A noble idea to write them to try to plug the hobby, but realistically,
the reason they chose morse code is because in the public's eye, it is
a ridiculously archaic (to the point of humor) method of communication
from the turn of the century.

To have it beat text messaging kids and their amazing modern electronic
devices from this century is funny.

The last thing they care about is broadening the public's understanding
of a fading hobby. They are after all, a comedy/entertainment show, not
any kind of educational resource.

I wish you the best of luck and I will certainly be cheering you on
because I love the hobby and all it has done for communication over the
years, but I can't imagine that this is going to do anything to promote
amateur radio.

The contest shows the weakness of the small instant messaging devices'
human interfaces more than anything else. Any competent keyboardist on
a full size keyboard could whip any coder, and for reliable point to
point communication, the instant messaging devices are way better in
every way.

For a real race, they would set you up with a radio and the other guy
with a Blackberry and have each contestant send a message to a buddy
without any pre-arrangement. The winner would be the first one whose
buddy got the message. You'd likely lose that one!

But I'll certainly Tivo it!

As some have suggested, Jay Leno is probably *not* trying to put in a
plug for amateur radio tonight.

However, one possible result of the "showdown" between the CW buffs and
text messengers may be a broadening of interest in Morse code. If the
Morse contingent crushes the competition, it's hard to imagine light
bulbs not going off among some hackers and tinkerers, young and old,
individual or corporate. This thought will occur to some of them: "It's
fast, can be used without even looking at it, and takes just one or two
buttons. Hmmmm ... why not provide a Morse interface as an option on a
messaging device?"

At my previous employer, a silicon-valley think tank, we evaluated
Morse as a minimalist user interface for small PDAs, and I know of at
least one other current research effort along these lines. I built an
experimental version of such a PDA, which used simple one- and
two-letter commands to input and output things like phone numbers,
notes, appointments, etc.

It worked quite well, and some day (in my copious spare time) I hope to
pack it into a keychain-sized device. This PDA would be the world's
smallest, would go with you everwhere, and would cost almost nothing
since it would need no display or keyboard. It would have a small audio
transducer so you could hold it up to your ear when using it, or an
inductively-coupled wireless link from the keychain unit to a
lightweight earbud. The rest of the device requires just one chip -- an
MCU with a lot of EEPROM and/or flash memory. (If anyone wants to help
me prototype or write firmware for this unit, let me know. I'm a bit
busy!)

We also looked at Morse as a UI for people with certain types of
disabilities. Just about any type of body movement, no matter how
slight, can allow people to communicate in this mode. Consider for
example the pillow-tapping protagonist in the famous anti-war novel
Johnny Got his Gun.

Those of us who have been using the world's simplest human-readable
digital communication for decades ought to be the principle movers
behind the effort to increase its uses and visibility. If a
Morse-capable PDA/communicator ever appears on the market, ham radio
could certainly benefit. (In fact, I'm hoping to put a tiny HF
transceiver into the keychain PDA. Just add an antenna :)

I just have this voice whispering to me as I read this that keeps saying
"bluetooth, J2ME, cellphone"...

After all, the smallest chip is no chip, and the next smallest is one
you're already carrying and powering for another reason. Maybe I'll
create some Java classes that translate between Morse and character
strings for starters.

Hey Wayne. Maggie. All you people who are smarter than I am (that covers a whole bunch of people!)

I'd *love* a morse input/output PDA! That'd like really rock my world!
And Maggie. Bluetooth. Yeah! Have it able to sync up with my cellphone
to transfer contacts and send SMS through or something...sure be
faster to send morse than to type on the phone keypad. I don't do T9
predictive text, it's too wrong too often and IMO more trouble to
correct than to just type stuff in a letter at a time without it, but
of course, still slower than morse input. LOL...I'll be a real
case...morse PDA, talking cellphone (see www.mobilespeak.com) ... I
love gadgets :)

Oh, and of course my KX1 :) Can't forget the KX1!

BTW, good point Wayne re: morse being good for motor impairments. I
know tht there've been alternative input devices of that sort for some
time, but it seems they, too, are (unfortunately) falling out of
favor. A shame, too.

      A few years back, I was driving my co-workers nuts with an Outlook
hack I wrote that would play the sender and subject of each incoming
message out my speaker in cw :).  Years earlier, I'd written a plugin for
TinyFugue that would send what each person said in the "chat room" out in
cw, with different pitch, speed, weight, and swing assigned to each of the
"regulars" :).
      Every so often, I get this crazy notion to put a morse code BBS on
the air :).  It would scan a range of freqs looking for someone calling
it, come back to them, offer the usual public/private mail options, and
otherwise interact entirely in cw.  No reason why it couldn't handle more
than one user at once.  'course given all of my other hobbies, I'll
probably never get to it ... which is probably a good thing :).

Even though Leno is doing it for entertainment value, there's benefit from
raising awareness that that an arcane system like Morse not only is still in
use, it is also competitive.

It's good Leno does it for entertainment.

My experience with employer-company-supplied-paid cell devices has been different.

When I worked one of this U.S.'s largest technology tradeshows in Las Vegas, NV, and I'm standing in a line at a cab-stand, waiting to catch a ride back to my hotel,
and I can't get enough signal (bars) to make a call, in a place like that, the last word I expect anyone to associate with any cell device is "reliability". PLEASE.

OK, so did you pull out your KX1 and keyer and call him up?

Because that's what we're talking about is the more reliable way to
communicate, not whether you got any bars at a cab stand once.

It *was* a great segment...

But speaking from our experience working with publicity and media
relations for the Pink Pistols ( http://www.pinkpistols.org ) over the
last few years, I just think it's sad that the Leno people managed to
almost completely bury the ham radio connection, although one of you (I
missed which one) managed to punch up that point despite the overall
spin of the segment.

I wonder how many people watching even knew that radios were being used?

I also think the costumes (and they *were* really cute) helped
contriubute to the perception that Morse is something that's not done
outside museums anymore.

When you only have two or three minutes to work with it's hard to do
everything you might want to. But a valiant effort nontheless!

You guys did a great job! The costumes were great, especially since you were
using keys that most people wouldn't recognize.

The comments were FB publicity. It all made the center point: Ham radio and
Morse code is still around and the most modern communications are not
necessarily faster.

It really did a great job of 'poking a hole' in the notion that "higher
tech" is "better tech" <G>.

And all of that in a few seconds as part of a simple little game Leno wanted
to play.

No, it's not likely to cause a rush to the hobby. That wasn't the
opportunity or the point.

Of course, if you had lost the contest you do realize that you'd have to
take up collecting shells or basket weaving instead of Ham radio, don't you?

Hearing the code on TV reminded me of Walter Winchell back in the 50's.

I remember the Walter Winchell newscasts when I was a kid.  The experts
from the broadcasting bunch say Winchell's code was a bunch of gibberish
and he wasn't actually sending any code at all!  Just something to get the listeners
excited, like he was reading "flashes" from an active circuit!

Winchell didn't send code (or, at least if he did, it was in code).  He
had a bug next to his right hand, and he would, for dramatic effect,
slap it around a bit.
