Re: Where are the K4 reviews?

Lyn WØLEN
I can’t imagine how it would feel to know that I had laid out $4k two years ago, and still be waiting for fulfillment.  NO, actually I can.

Several years ago, an up-and-coming system integration business I had been associated with for several years (as a VAR) was going thru many of the same types of growing pains in bringing a wonderful new product to market.  The CEO vowed he would run the business as if they were broke, which they very nearly were.  But the employees were faithful believers in the company and the product, and worked very hard to make it a success.

Early one Monday morning, I had a call from that CEO advising me that they had sold the company to another industry player (a non-competitor) and that they wanted me to join them for lunch to discuss the deal.  My fear and trepidation slowly disappeared that day as I met the new management “team” (with all the old R&D team still hard at work), got viable answers to all the hard questions and quickly recognized how an immediate cash infusion ($10 Million) had an amazing ability to totally turn things around, grease the wheels, and create an industry shakeup that precipitated a wave of further consolidation and rapid development.

It was a win-win situation born out of the impending potential disaster we had all feared.

Hang in there.  Times might seem tough, but there are some very smart people at work here.

The natives are getting restless and it would be good to hear something official from Elecraft.  It's been too long since we've heard much of anything.  I would like to know if I can expect my Group 1 order, submitted on August 8, 2019, has any chance of getting to me before summer, 2021 begins or is it likely that I will have to wait another year.  I could have asked much the same question a year ago never expecting that a year from then, there would still be no K4 sitting on my table by now.  By the way, when I submitted my order the expected shipping date was estimated to be November or December, 2019.  That's pre-pandemic.

Re: Where are the K4 reviews?

David Gilbert-2

As the kids say, "cool story, bro."

None of it changes the fact that lots of people have put out a lot of
money with almost zero visibility into when they will get their product,
and the K4 situation doesn't have the significantly leveraged upside
that your story did.  There isn't the same risk/reward ratio here that
your example had.  Apples and potatoes.

There are lots of reasons why Elecraft could be granted some slack for
major and repeated delays in shipping the K4, but the part I don't
understand is the almost total absence of regular communication on the
delivery status.  It makes no sense at all.  If Wayne can find the time
to tell us about his latest pedestrian mobile contact he should be able
to tell his investors where the company stands on actually producing the
product that they paid for.

I'm just an interested observer here since I haven't ordered a K4, but
that doesn't change the fact that I sympathize with those who did.

Paid in full here since last year and ordered June 2019, try rationalizing that with spouse.  Down to my last TT Orion of two, barely keeping it on the air.  Almost at point of needing to cancel and ask money be returned so I can get something else and keep operating.  Seeing nothing, hearing nothing (not even from anyone receiving a K-4 - assuming some are shipping).  Latter I don’t understand how anyone would allow themselves to be bound in secrecy.  If occurring must be significant benefit for observing code of silence.  I see no light at all inside the tunnel.

David,

Is the customer set you are referring to and claiming to be sympathetic too even in existence? Elecraft will refund money to anyone that asks. Wouldn’t those that can’t have their money tied up have pulled out by now? Wouldn’t those that are upset with the communications be gone by now??

Re: Where are the K4 reviews?

It is puzzling to see the lack of substantive information as other have
posted.  This has not been how Wayne and Eric and Elecraft have operated
in the past.

I don't believe it is asking too much for regular updates on delivery
dates.

Just because some are not happy with a delay does not mean that tehy
don't want the product.  This radio is a lot of money for many people.
I doubt they are doing so well that they can afford to chase off a
portion of their business.  It cost far more to bring in new customers
than it does to keep old ones.

Re: Where are the K4 reviews?

I am curious. Did you miss the update that was done via the remote Hamvention a few weeks ago. Group 1 clears in May?? Is your communication comment based on lack of website info? Customer’s that paid (me) should get emails every week??  I feel like I have been kept in the loop. That’s quite different than being over joyed by a delay...

If you believe all of that to be true, clearly you haven't been
following the posts here on the reflector.

Besides, I don't find "if you can't accept being in the dark ask for
your money back" to be sound business practice.  It certainly wouldn't
have been tolerated in the large business I ran for several years.

Re: Where are the K4 reviews?

Stephen Shearer
In reply to this post by stengrevics
"Group 1, done by May" ??  Would be nice.  I am not going to hold my
breath. The few (2?), "I got a UPS package", were from orders entered
the first day.  Group 1 was not closed until Jan 2020??

"I Think" some of the communications from Elecraft are "hung up" with
the Ferengi print from the online event keeping Elecraft from
re-publishing any of the online event communication until the end of the
30 day "hold".  If I was running the online event, I would want
exclusive "use" of any publications for the full 30 days.  So, 16? Apr...

Yes, I could pay my $10 and see all the doc.  I was unavailable during
the actual event, so I didn't sign up at all.

The last I looked, the KX3 is back ordered, too.

I would not mind an additional 6 month delay, IF I was told it was
because Elecraft was moving to TN so that they could save 10% over
current cost/taxes in CA.  I don't expect a move to happen. So, 60 days
till the end of May, can they do it?

I placed my Group 1 order a week or so before Thanksgiving 2019...

We're in the midst of a pandemic. Elecraft is a small company, and
they've had COVID in house. Systems that were set up for people working
in their office/lab/factory break down when that isn't possible.

David Gilbert-2

Not true.  You're wrong, and you're just trying to obfuscate the point.

As I said, I don't have a K4 on order, but if I did have one on order
and was given a clear projection that I could count on, at least I'd
have what I needed to make an informed decision and I'd be satisfied
with that.  Those who have invested in the K4 don't have that.

Re: Where are the K4 reviews?

Eric Norris-2
In reply to this post by David Gilbert-2
Elecraft is unlike all other world-class mfrs of amateur radio
transceivers.  They are very, very small.  They have to be to keep their
margins big enough to compete with giants who mfr marine, aviation, and
consumer electronics.  They can't get away with marketing a KX4 that puts
out ONE WATT more than a KX3 and call it ALL NEW.  If an engineer's house
burns down, they can't easily slide someone else over from another
project.  Same with COVID.

If you ran a company like Elecraft, would you publicize every setback when
every single employee is critical?  No, you wouldn't.  Either give them
more slack, and wait, or go somewhere else and buy something else.  But
please stop the endless whining.

K4s are out there--I hear them on in contests.

Eric has stated they hope to clear the Group 1 backlog by the end of May.
He has also stated that K4 production will ramp up by an order of magnitude
and more.

Remember the K3 rollout?  KPA1500?  NO COVID.  NO WILDFIRES.  I just passed
my two-week vax period, and I am older than almost everybody who works at
Elecraft.  Do the math.

Re: Where are the K4 reviews?

David Gilbert-2

Uhh .. I'm not the one doing the whining.  The guys who post here asking
when they might actually know when they will get their K4 are the ones
you should maybe be accusing.  I'm just making an outsider observation
on their behalf.

Besides, this isn't a marketing issue.  It's a simple communications
issue, and like I said ... if we can hear about QRP contacts and
pedestrian mobile contacts, the folks who actually invested
interest-free money for the last 20 months or so probably have a right
to equal consideration.

Re: Where are the K4 reviews?

In reply to this post by Jim Brown-10
I think there were also Elecraft employees who sadly lost their houses in the wild fires of last summer.  That plus pandemic plus loss of IC fab house(s) in Asia plus cancelation of most all Ham conventions last year - just a lot to endure in the last 12 months - I do not envy anyone trying to keep a business afloat, and deliver hi-tech products.

Then just when you thing you’ve got it pulled together, you get a container ship - with 20,000 container capacity(!), one of the worlds biggest ships  (over 4 football fields in length!!!) - wedged sideways across the Suez, and 400+ ships backed up behind - it’s crazy.

Try to buy a new quality bicycle today, say priced at $1k or more.  The shops in my area are quoting 1.5 year delivery on Trek and recommending Craig’s List !!?&^!@!

It’s just crazy.  A perfect storm in so many ways and so many fronts.  Hang in there!

Re: Where are the K4 reviews?

Hmmmm ....

Anybody interested in trading a new K4 (when you get it) for a couple of really fine Chinese (they all are, folks ...) bicycles?  I give up the bikes when you give up the K4.

Deal?  Just checking ...

The corona virus may have delayed kid's education and the K4 for a
year but certainly not everything.  Most products are still being
manufactured and are available.

Re: Where are the K4 reviews?

Steve KC6ZKT
In my day job, working for a supplier of technology to a wide swath of
consumer electronics manufacturers, I've observed over the past year
major shifts in demand and the kinds of products people are buying.
There have been surges in demand for some categories of products, and
collapses in demand for other categories; all of which foil production
and distribution plans which are normally designed to play-out of 18-36
months. There have been supply chain disruptions. There have been
shipping and logistics disruptions. The disruptions go deep into almost
every component and service you can imagine.

Elecraft, or any small company building a niche product, who manages to
stay solvent throughout all of this disruption is to be admired, even if
their plans need to change radically.

As for the perceived lack of communication: I can also understand their
reluctance to say much when they have their own uncertainty about the
future.

About me: I'm happy to wait to order a K4 until they offer the kit. For
me, it's a hobby, not my livelihood.
