Rig Interface for Digital

NK7Z
Hello,

What rig interface are most of you all using for computer controlled
radios?  What model and why please?  I currently have a Rigblaster Pro,
and will be selling it along with the Pro III.

Richard Thorne-4
Microham Microkeyer II.

Handles all modes including true FSK.  Also has a built in soundcard for
voice recordings.

Re: Rig Interface for Digital

Don Wilhelm-4
In reply to this post by NK7Z
With my K2, I use a homebrew interface - see my website www.w3fpr.com
I use none with the K3, just a serial (or USB to serial adapter)
connection to the RS-232 port and the computer soundcard to line in and
line out on the K3 rear panel.  The K3 has internal isolation transformers.

For my KX3, I insert isolation transformers between the computer and mic
and headphone output (going directly to the computer soundcard).  Some
have found that the transformers are not needed if the KX3 and computer
are adequately bonded.
For the KX3 control cable, I use the KX3USB cable.  No interface box
required.

Station Master is a "band decoder" not a digital/voice/cw interface ...

For digital/voice/cw including UART based FSK and support for contest
logging software, look at USB Interface III, DigiKeyer II or microKEYER
II depending on the feature level you need.

Using the K3's native RS-232 and Line-In/Line Out does not address some
issues like: computers with only USB, conflicts with the operating
system over access to the sound card (e.g. OS noises and streaming
audio reaching the rig), the ability to generate flexible messages
on CW/RTTY from logging software, *properly timed FSK* vs. the paddle
to FSK conversion, etc.

The K3 is light years ahead of other rigs for built-in digital (sound
card) support but a dedicated interface still has its advantages.

Re: Rig Interface for Digital

Richard Thorne-4
In reply to this post by Stephen Bloom
The Station Master, while providing rig control, is intended to be an
antenna switch controller, among other things.

If he has a rigblaster pro, I can only assume he's looking for rig
control and handling the digital modes.

The Microham Microkeyer II is the way to go.

The ultimate setup, which I have, is the Microkeyer II which handles the
rig control and digital interface along with the Station Master which
handles my antenna switching (and future band pass filter switching)

All I do is change bands/modes on my K3 and the KAT500/KPA500 and
antenna switch follows along.

If your not interested in true FSK and want to use AFSK then there is no
need for an interface.  Just plug your computer sound card directly into
the K3 and connect a serial cable (usb or rs-232) between the computer
and K3.  However, I would think you would lose the computer sound card
for normal use unless you have 2 sound cards.

I sure am glad I didn't know the improperly timed K3 FSK generated by
the K3's paddle to FSK conversion doesn't work.......

I guess I will need to delete my recent contacts with HC8ART and W1AW/*
to name a few.

Perhaps it's not proper FSK to a purest, but for the quick switch to
catch a wanted RTTY contact, it works a charm, and there was no
hesitation from the receiving stations, as if they had to do anything
special to decode this improperly timed FSK sent with the K3's paddle.

just saying....

Two audio cables from the K3 Line In and Line Out to their opposites on the
shack laptop computer.

Why?  Because it's simple, works fine and is inexpensive.

The variable length stop bit, lack of diddles, and lack of unshift on
space (?) can certainly cause problems in marginal conditions.  While
you may not see it with strong signals, ask folks like W7AY or G3YYD
who write RTTY software how much SNR you loose due to the erratic timing
of the paddle sent CW.  Even worse, ask them about character loss due
to framing errors when each character does not start at the proper time.

There are very few users who can consistently send one character every
160 ms on keyer paddles and that's what it takes to generate "clean",
properly timed RTTY (at 45.45 baud - it's even worse at 75 baud).

USB-serial adapter plugged into the P3 which plugs into the K3.  N1MM in
contests using a WinKeyUSB, I don't use computer control any other time.
Used the same with my K2 [it's become my field radio and I haven't had
the computer connected in a long time]

For RTTY [almost 100% contests]: Same USB cable for the CAT, N1MM+MMTTY
and two stereo cables from Radio Shack in AFSK-A.

For PSK31/WSJT's [not very often]: Same CAT, same stereo cables, various
software such as MixW, Fldigi, or whatever.

Good point ..I was only thinking about CAT/multiple antenna control.  I use
a MK2R+ with a remote (at the Tower Base) Ameritron Switch and
HRD/N1MM/Wintest/who knows what else next week for digi.  I am going to swap
that out for a
Double Six switch and a Station Master.

The Station Master, while providing rig control, is intended to be an
antenna switch controller, among other things.

If he has a rigblaster pro, I can only assume he's looking for rig control
and handling the digital modes.

The Microham Microkeyer II is the way to go.

The ultimate setup, which I have, is the Microkeyer II which handles the rig
control and digital interface along with the Station Master which handles my
antenna switching (and future band pass filter switching)

All I do is change bands/modes on my K3 and the KAT500/KPA500 and antenna
switch follows along.

If your not interested in true FSK and want to use AFSK then there is no
need for an interface.  Just plug your computer sound card directly into the
K3 and connect a serial cable (usb or rs-232) between the computer and K3.
However, I would think you would lose the computer sound card for normal use
unless you have 2 sound cards.

I use Fldigi on Linux, and just connect the audio cables from the
computer's built in sound board to the K3's jacks since they are already
isolated.  Both the Hamlib and RigCAT control backends support keying
the K3 using the RS-232 command set so no need for an extra PTT port on
the computer.

I have always used home brewed interfaces, mostly using optos but some with
simple transistor switches. I run FSK exclusively(if possible). With the K3
simple audio cables for receive, on the Kenwood & Yaesu rigs a transformer
on receive. Simple job, simple circuit. With the KX3 all that is needed is
simple cables from Elecraft.
