TX5K

Hi All,

I suspect lots of folks are working the Clipperton gang so my working them
too is not such a big deal. However, I snagged them on, not only 40 and 30,
but also 80 and 160 CW. The antenna I was using is the unique thing--an R8
vertical, which is only really supposed to go down to 40 meters! I did use
the KPA500 and KAT500, but only at about 200 watts on those bands. I was
afraid to try anything higher, but didn't need it! However, the KAT500 gave
me a nice match--1:1 on 80, and about 1.4:1 on 160. I give all the credit
to the KAT500 tuner, even though my ERP was probably pretty darn low--maybe
even QRP off the antenna! Great tuner! Those folks on Clipperton probably
have some pretty decent antennas too. They were LOUD!

I'll probably get chided for trying 80 and 160 with my R8, but I think I
kept the power low enough not to do any harm. I did the same thing for the
VP6DX DXpedition--even on SSB--worked them on 20 band slots. Otherwise, I
pretty much stay clear of those two bands. It's fun, though, to see what
you can "get away with" sometimes. Anyway, I'd never be able to do that
without a really FB tuner like the KAT500, even though I'm just "matching"
50 ohms at the rig and not really "tuning" the antenna to anything remotely
efficient. When I worked the VP6DX DXpedition I was using a manual tuner
(but a pretty good one--an old Ten-Tec), but it took several minutes to
finally find an acceptable match. With the KAT500 it was only a matter of a
few seconds.

I'm delighted to see such interest in DX on this reflector. Once when
I posted the QRV of an Elecraft-powered DXpedition, I got a strange
email from a reflector lurker saying that DX-related posts were off
topic. However, it's clear that there's a lot of interest -- some
casual, some hard-core -- among reflector users. After all, there is
no radio better designed for DXing than a 2-receiver K3, and a lot of
them are sold to DXers for exactly that reason. For whatever reason,
Clipperton has brought out a lot of commentary, much more than, say,
the Comoros, Swains Island or Conway Reef, or the numerous other rare
and juicy expeditions in the recent past. It's great to see the
activity that their expedition has stirred. BTW, if you haven't read

My main reason for owning a K3 or I should say K3's SO2R none better and I'm
a DX'er first before all else.

"The DXer's Friend Elecraft" TX5K 3 bands and working still for me, my
friend another K3 user has worked them all bands all modes except for one.

On 30m, using my KX3 at 5W, worked them this morning. Dual RX helped A LOT!

I'm in the log for ten QSOs so far, all at 5W. CW on all bands 40-10
and SSB on 40, 20, 17, and 10 (except the 30M QSO on the first day is
one of those missing from the online log). I'm still working on 80 and
160 -- so far, when they've been loud enough to work they've been taking
advantage of pretty good conditions to EU.

Some turkey was on 40CW last night complaining about them working EU,
but it's a very good thing that they're doing it. TX5K is easy from the
US, much tougher from EU. Here in CA, we certainly appreciate it when
the shoe is on the other foot, and DXpeditions in AF and the Near East
stand by for us.

Except those EU run DXpeditions *rarely* tell Europe to standby and
work North/South America for hours on end on every open band like the
guys from TX5K have been doing the last couple days. If DXpeditions to
Africa, the Middle East and SE Asia would work NA/SA exclusively when
the bands were open for the first three days to a week, I (and a great
many others) would not be so put out about TX5K's "All Europe, all the
time" antics.

Okay then. Seventeen band/modes. Heard them S9 on a very quiet 160 this AM but didn't have the extension wires on the dipole. Now done, we'll see what happens tomorrow. Of course if they show up on the other slot I need (75 SSB) I'm out of luck.

I just loaded the K3 EZ program which appears to be a 2008 version, the last
version (?). I understand the author is an SK.

Anyone have any plans to bring this back or create something similar.?

This could really be a simple way to set up a K3 with radio buttons and
different fields to either fill in or with check-offs for fixed values

...just a thought from a newbie K3 user.

N2BC told me he was looking for someone to pick up the programming but he
apparently didn't do it.

I had a problem with the 2008 version not working with my Windows 7/64
computer to read and set the TX/RX EQ. The earlier versions worked OK.
