I also added the KIO3B modification to my K3 (2197) in addition to the
synthesizer, DVR and TXCO so it operates just like my K3S's. The only difference is on the Keypad 6 which says DUAL PB on the K3 and APF on the K3S that I can see. Ed.. I'd say it is called and "updated K3". The K3S is different and my
understanding is that a K3 can not be updated to be a K3S. All abet similar, in the end, they are different radios. Clarification:
The Tentec Omni VI Plus is not the same as the Tentec Omni VI, opt 3. There is a difference, in model number and performance and features. Thus from my take, a K3 upgrade is just that, a K3 that has the recommended factory upgrades installed. And a K3S is a K3S that can only come from the factory. One would think that K3s represents multiple K3 radios. As in Plural of K3.
I am sure that it causes some confusion to many who read the Elecraft reflector or other places where the radios are discussed. I do thank Wayne and Eric for a list that says. All this is fun and good, but if you are selling it, it needs to be
listed as a K3 SN xxxx with the specific upgrades enumerated - so the buyer knows what he is buying. I have run into this problem many, many times with the early K2s - they are listed as being upgraded, only to find out (for instance) that only the firmware has been changed while the A to B upgrades have not been installed. Couldn’t agree more. I’ll wager there is at least one early K3 out there with a new synthesizer board and none of the published K3 updates installed. Sure .. it’s “upgraded”, but what is it?
