We kept our frequency on 14.314 MHz again today to try to dodge some QRM
that has been persistent on 14.316 for some people. We had 14 participants including net control and ran for 14 minutes. The discussions were about difficulty getting "stereo" out of the headphones for one station and help with mic setup for a Heil HM10 for another. The "QRM" on 14.316 is unlikely to go away, ever. This is the 4th harmonic of 3.579 MHz, the TV color burst frequency, and a popular choice for oscillators in all sorts of consumer and office devices (not necessarily TV receivers). This has been a problem on 20 meters for at least 30 years that I know of, perhaps longer. Also, because many devices that use this frequency derive it from a square-wave oscillator (a couple of gates). the harmonics of these devices are often prodigious. Another considerations is that because some designs need to have this frequency only approximately correct, it is no surprise to find some units running up to a few hundred Hertz plus or minus from 3.579, and thus (after multiplication by harmonics) hams end up with a broad band of QRM that can be 2 or 3 kHz from 14.316, or anywhere in between. Are all these sources "illegal", and thus covered by part 15 rules? Yes, they are. This is part of what manufacturers "certify" on those Part 15 labels you see on so many items of consumer electronics. Technically, the owner of the device is at fault, and could be made to cease and desist using the offending item. However, then we have the real world. Identifying, finding and fixing what could be several dozen such sources in your immediate vicinity can be and for practical purposes is an unsurmountable problem. The FCC literally cannot help you here, as much as they might want to. They have neither the budget or time to solve literally tens or even hundreds of millions (no exaggeration here!) of these cases. Pandora is well and truly out of the box on this one. I would respectfully suggest a permanent change of net frequency to something less likely to have this problem. - Jim, KL7CC Phil and Christina wrote: > We kept our frequency on 14.314 MHz again today to try to dodge some QRM > that has been persistent on 14.316 for some people. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I didn't hear any noise on 316 today with my beam pointed NW from here in AZ. Just a group of guys who were operating there and they even mentioned that the Elecraft net would be starting shortly and that they wanted to be off the frequency by net start time. Very nice of them but then again they were Canadians and they are known for their courtesy. At least the ones i know. The group on 14.316 before our net time is always nice and leaves the
frequency by 1800Z. One of the regulars there, KA7GKN, helps keep that happening. A very courteous operator. Since 14316 is the 4th harmonic of the 3579 TV color burst frequency, I think that it makes sense to move from that spot to 14314, which appears to have fewer issues. 73, Phil, NS7P -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]]On Behalf Of [hidden email] Sent: Monday, September 28, 2009 12:10 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (9-27-09) I didn't hear any noise on 316 today with my beam pointed NW from here in AZ. The California QSO Party was providing lots of QRM around our regular
frequency today. I opened on 14.314 MHz, but quickly announced a QSY to 14.317, which was quieter but still noisy. Anyway, there were 10 of us on 14.317. We ran for 8 minutes there. Afetr we concluded, I went down to 14.314 and heard Windy, KM5Q, looking for check-ins. There were 2 more that checked in there. The total time was 23 minutes across the 2 frequencies. There was a bit of discussion about mic setup and pre-beta firmware. Thanks to everyone who put up with the QRM to check-in. Here is the list of participants. Wow, it was the best net we have had in awhile. There were 28 of us, and we
ran for 33 minutes. In addition to all of the stateside stations, we had Andy, M0CHK, from the UK and Peter, ZL1PWD, from New Zealand! That spread us across a lot of time zones! The most unusual weather was 6 inches of snow yesterday in Nebraska (KA0NCR). The signals were generally OK, although a few required relays to get through. The discussions were on firmware versions and possibly higher receiver noise levels in the most recent few. Thanks to everyone who checked in. Here is the list of participants. There was an Elecraft Net originating from Iraq at one point. You may wish to inquire about that or simply start your own.

Hi Kevin,
I'm a brand new one Elecrafter and received my K3 last Tuesday. Only Elecraft company knows where K rigs have been solded to world wide Hams. Am I the only Elecrafter in UAE ? I hope not Hi ! I will check tomorrow at the Emirates Amateur Radio Society (A62ER) and will send a request on their website. You've just learned me was an Elecraft net originating from Iraq, is it still active ? The Elecraft net is also an useful tool to discover other Elecrafters if they are enrolled on it. Hope to contact you as well Bst 73's Philippe A65BI Note: As per the new rules in UAE, starting 01/01/2009 , A61 is reserved for Emiraties only, A65 for foreigners with a residency visa for up to one year, A62 for radio clubs and A67 for VHF . >>> Kevin Rock <[hidden email]> 16-11-2009 8:24 >>> There was an Elecraft Net originating from Iraq at one point. Hello Philippe,
There is an archive of old Elecraft Reflector email. I am sure there is someone out there who can help you find the Iraq Elecraft Net listing. I am unsure of how long ago it was but at least three or four years ago. Congratulations on your new radio. I am sure you will have fun with it. From UAE you should be able to find a lot of nice DX unavailable to me at this current point in our sunspot cycle. I have this really big ocean to my west and south which cuts down on contacts quite a bit. If we could make it a little narrower I could hit further into Asia more easily. GL and 73, Kevin. Hi Kevin,
Yesterday W2 on 20m was 59+ on my area, 18:25GMT. No directional antenna on my side due to local constraints, only a 40m DELTA loop sloping 45ยบ, top feeded with an 4:1 balun from Bob KZ5R (LLC-balun design)...located on the top of a 32 stairs building, less 1km from the sea. When we have an east coast US station with a potent signal/good antennas, we can try having them listen for your area. That might help you check in, but you probably won't hear most of the net. Somewhat Like Peter, ZL1PWD, who checks in sometimes.

The net today had 23 participants but was troubled by QRM from 14.313MHz.
The QSO on that adjacent frequency had said that is was wrapping up before 1800Z, but evidently stayed on that frequency after our net started. We shifted up to 14.315 MHz part way through the net, but still were troubled by the QRM. It seemed malicious at times with carriers on top of us. I readily nulled them out and kept going. Peter, ZL1PWD, is becomming a regular. He breaks me on the back of my beam. Good job, Peter. Our discussions were on audio "growling" and its cures. Thanks to everyone who checked in. Phil, the Reflector is getting out of control. While waiting for the
SSB net to begin I began reading mail on the Reflector. When I next looked at the time, and listened, the net was over. I need a Q-signal for Reflector interference, say QRI, perhaps. Sorry I didn't make it, Dave, W8OV On 12/20/2009 9:52 PM, Phil and Christina wrote: > The net today had 19 participants again. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
